Assuming you have a 2005 or older Sonata. You can take a chance that the timing belt will last longer, but why take that risk? If it breaks, the engine is trashed. If you bought the car new, it has the 10 year/100k powertrain warranty. If you don't follow factory maintenance schedules and the car is damaged because of it, don't look for Hyundai to honor the warranty.

A belt could last a lot longer than 60k. But maybe not. The "average" time a belt lasts won't help you if your belt is below the average. As Dirty Harry said, "How lucky do ya feel?"

Ouch, there's a lot to chew on in your post! Forgive me for saying so, but your calling the engine a V4 instead of an I4 leads me to believe that mechanical knowledge might be somewhat lacking at your house. Nothing wrong with that, but here are some tips that may save you some money in the future.

1. Tires should generally last longer than 28,000 miles. Have a look at the wheels and see if there has been some hard contact with a curb or pothole. Either one could have knocked the front end out badly enough to eat a set of tires in 28k miles. The fact that the shop added a "camber adjustable ball joint (tie rod)" would seem to indicate hard contact at some point unless you're only being ripped off.

2. How did the tires look before they were changed? You do take an occasional look at the tires, don't you? If not, you should. That occasional tire look will also alert you to the uneven wear caused by an "out of alignment" front end. An alignment early on after the problem occurred could have saved the original tires. It's a great idea to have the front end aligned every couple of years as a preventative measure.

3. Many modern cars are no longer equipped with camber adjustable front ends. Basically, camber is the angle at which he tire meets the road in the vertical axis. An accident or heavy contact with a curb or pothole could necessitate the installation of an adjustable tie rod in order to get the tire vertical again. That's why I'm suggesting that some contact has been made.

4. Suggest to your son that he ask to see any parts that need to be replaced before OK'ing the repair. It's also a good idea to take a look at the parts that have been replaced just to make sure that the job was actually done.

Good Luck.

Check engine light P0171 heads up by roracer

Engine light came on checked w/OBD-II scanner error code read P0171 checked forums cleaned MAF sensor deleted error code P0171 drove around 1/2 tank of fuel check engine light appears w/same code. Nailed down the problem I had purchased a Fram air filter Auto Zone and it must of been restricting air to engine, replaced with Hyundai OEM and no check engine light. I have a 2000 Sonata w/145,000 miles. Hopefully this may save someone a service visit.

2006 Hyundai Sonata Crank Pulley by sid75

I have a 2006 Sonata and when I started it up it made a horrible squealing noise so I shut it down and lifted the hood to find the crank pulley had separated itself. It must have been pressed together and for some reason it became separated. Part of it is still attached to the crankshaft and the ribbed part is just laying there. Has anyone else had this problem. I have 68000 miles on the car. Do they have to pull the engine to replace the crank pulley?? Thanks....

Would not the 100,000 mile power-train warranty cover this?

When driving my sonata sometimes it will starts to slow down and sometimes stops even if I am pressing down on the gas. When I pull over and shut it down, then restart the car it will drive ok for a while. This happens in stop and go traffic and on the hwy when driving below 40-50 mile per hour. The check eng light sometimes come on and off. I am not sure if it needs a tune up or a sensor needs to be replaced. The dealership also doesn't know. Please advise.

I do not think so. Plus the dealership didn't bring this up.

Do you mean the dealer did not tell you it would be under warranty?
The pulley is on the engine. I would ask why it is not covered? It does not move the car but it is part of the engine assembly. It is not a maintenance item and I assume you did not damage it so I would want to hear why it is not covered. This could be a $200 to $400 question you need to hear an answer.

Dealership pushing useless maintenance items by m7chael

My dealership wanted to replace my iridium plugs at 60000 miles with platinum. They also wanted to replace my timing belt. That's right, their computer system flagged the service mgr to say that not replacing a belt that doesn't exist (06's use timing chains) would void my warranty. Shoddy. Are others being pushed by dealers for these worthless items?

Yes. I have a new Sonata and when I brought it in for routine service as per the manual, they handed me their own schedule of "needed" maintenance by mileage which was far more extensive than that provided in the Hyundai manual. It took some clarification on my part to get them to acknowledge that their schedule was not Hyundai's recommnedations but their own and that my warranty would not be impacted if I opted out. But they were quite aggressive about their recommendations, warning me of all sorts of expensive disaster if I didn't comply. Made me not trust them at all!
