Another consideration is, you are getting close to the 120k service. That is a biggie, e.g. includes timing belt, which you mentioned, and a lot of other stuff. You might add up all the maintenance the car needs, including plugs/wires and the 120k service, and consider the value of your car, and factor that into the consideration to hold onto the car or get a new one. Of course, you could do a LOT of maintenance on the Sonata for the cost of a few payments on that new Malibu. The comment about the transmission making noise is troubling though.
 
P.S. Has the subframe ever been checked? I have read where some Sonatas of that vintage have problems with a rusted subframe.

I remember reading about the subframe rusting problem...and, I think I asked the place where I have had all my maintenance done for the past 2 years about it and they told me there was no rust problem...but, you can be sure I will run that by them again.
As to the so-called transmission noise...when the car is in drive I hear it and in reverse...but it stops in park and neutral. Engine? but, I do believe I get some trans slippage occasionally. I've taken to warming up the car a bit longer...so as to try to avoid shifting gears too early after starting up the car.
Hey, what do I know about cars...just been USING them for almost 50 years. when they run, you are happy...when they develop prioblems, you hate them. That's why I began considering getting a new car. In the past, I let the cars nickle and dime me to death as one mechanic said to me. Unfortunately...I may go off in the opposite direction This Time in buying new!
Ah, how to get an (honest) appraisal of just what is needed to repair the car...so you can make the RIGHT decision!

Good day to all i'm the (proud) owner of a Sonata 2000 automatic 165000 km 4 cyl engine.
The problem the engine sound like a diesel engine no backfire, no rough idle, no black smoke but no power.
The million dollar question what is wrong with the engine. Your help would me appreciated a lot.

Is the check Engine light on? Have you done any maintance to the engine? How about the fuel filter?

Unbelievable. Just took my car in for basic maintenance and to have the center brake light bulb replaced. The Hyundai dealer wants $75 to change it! I thought he was pulling a fast one by explaining how hard it was to change. But I examined it myself quickly and didn't see an easy way to do it. For $75 they really need to use a bulb that will last at least 20 years.
 
On my last car this was literally a 90 second job.
 
edit: I wanted to add that although in the owners manual the replacement of several bulbs is outlined, this high mounted rear stop light is not described.

Well, folks, I finally did get to check through my bills...Seems last spark plug/wires job was done at 78,000 miles. i remember the dealer telling me at the 90,000 mile service that i needed sparkplugs & wires. fortunately i refused due to the high cost...now almost 4 years later i realize that i could not have needed them replaced & the dealer was only doing what the service called for.
So, now we know that i am at 114,500 miles - almost 75,000 miles on the plugs and wires. At 120,000 miles, they are a replaceable item on the chart...as is the timing belt. So, does it pay to do both at the same time because of the labor involved? Meaning, places mecahnic goes to do repair work are the same? therefore don't do plugs & wires now and in 5,000 miles do the timing belt?
do both NOW?
Appreciate ANY shared information.

If you can afford to do both...do them now. If the timing belt breaks you could be looking at a major expense. I wouldn't wait until 120K to change the belt. You're close enough to warrant the replacement of the belt AND the plugs/wires. Your gas mileage should improve helping offset the plugs/wires cost. Go for it my friend.

read somewhere where it cost about $3000 to repair the engine after the timing belt SNAPPED! can you say, shoot it?
Certainly NOT looking for anything like that.
Car repair shop suggested doing the plugs & wires now...since they are WAY overdue.
Yes, labor costs will overlap and I will pay TWICE if I only do plugs/wires now & later do the timing belt.
I'm not ready to buy new so that leans me into (forces?) maintenance.
I see a battery ahead...less than 6 months; some transmission checkage...wish I could get a straight answer from the repair place...before I do plugs and wires.
Thoughts on other-than dealer or 3rd party/value added business doing the plugs/wires? and can the THROTTLE be addressed at this time...believe it would fall under the 120,000 miles Tune Up...aka service!
I just love how they change the titles?
Does anyone THINK that with all the financial problems...that mechanics SHOULD reduce their hourly wage...didn't expect that, now did you? or, the business skewerng us with too high maintenance costs?
Aren't we ALL in this debacle TOGETHER?
What happened to 'don't you want MY business?'

Automatic Headlight Sensor. by newowner10

My headlights on my 2009 GLS go on too late. I looked at the manual and the sensor seem to be where the flashing red light is, I have been covering the flashing red light with Orange-Yellow Kapton Tape. The tape is semi-translucent so 5 layers should be reducing the light 50%. It seems to have helped somewhat. Am I covering the wrong thing? If I cover it with an opaque material the lights go on in a minute or so,
