momentary hard brake pedal issue by jpryba

I figured with there being around 50 messages a day or two after mine about an unrelated brake issue, I would repost my message and see if anyone has any thoughts.

from before...

I have an 06 Sonata GLS (4 cylinder, automatic) with a little over 41,000 miles on it. I've noticed as of late that my brake pedal can get a bit firm occasionally when stopping, and it has happened at both high and low speeds (and not always with a panic stop). I can duplicate it to an extent by accelerating a little and then going for the brakes. The brake pedal will get firm for just a split second and then it'll feel more like normal immediately after. I don't recall ever having this sort of issue in the past. I'm still on my original pads and rotors and have had the dealer inspect, clean, and adjust the brake system every year. However, my dealer did replace the master cylinder recently because it was making an awful creaking noise when braking.

Any thoughts as to what might be happening? I'm going to have the dealer look at it Monday afternoon (make that Saturday morning) and figured I would ask about it here beforehand to see if anyone else can shed any light on this.

xmercuri: Were you ever able to get the problem with the trunk popping open resolved? I have a 2007 Sonata that does the same thing.

For the longest time I just thought I was crazy, but no, it really happens. I haven't taken it to the dealer about it, but after reading your story about it happening while you were away and draining the battery, I guess I should get it taken care of.

Car will not start periodically by sonata01

I have a 2001 Sonata GLS V- with 120,000 miles. I am trying to determine why it does not start. No codes reccorded !!! I had it towed to my service garage and the next day it started??? Possibility -- Fuel Pump. Needless to say, I am not having the gas tank removed until I can "prove" that the pump is the problem. Has anyone had a similar problem, which turned out to be the fuel pump? Please pass along any info which may be helpful in troubleshooting my problem.
Thanks, Tom

Hope this helps. There are approx. 5 screws around the perimeter of the door panel; also, 1 by the door handle, and maybe one by the arm rest. I have a 2001 which has a screw in the tray of the arm rest. You may also have to remove the plastic triangle plate just above the panel by the front of the door window (snaps in place) after removing all the screws, pry out around the perimeter, as you may have plastic pop-in holders which help keep the panel tight, then lift up to remove the top of door panel from door frame, be careful not to pull out too far, because you have to unplug any harnesses behind the door panel for your power windows and power door locks. GOOD LUCK !!!!

I have a 2002 Sonata and I've noticed the car won't start periodically as well... my best diagnosis is that the alarm system -- which disables the ignition system -- seems to not shut-off and therefore won't allow the car to start. I don't have any documentable proof of this, but my solution was to have a remote starter installed which bypasses the alarm system (I don't know the specifics on that either). but I have not had the "not starting" problem since (4 months now). I spent several weeks searching for a solution -- the dealer said they could go into the onboard computer and re-set the computer part that handles the alarm, but they could not completely disable the alarm (and the starting problem would probably come back). I hope this info helps -- if not to solve your problem, but maybe to help find the solution.

When I went in for an oil change today, the dealer had a look at my brake system. It turns out the booster is losing some vacuum, so they have a new one on order. The brakes are otherwise working fine, but I'll make sure to be more cautious than usual when accelerating, as this is when the brake booster loses its vacuum for whatever reason.

Interesting. I've had the same problem - suddenly noticing the trunk open light on the instrument panel. I've always assumed that I accidentally pressed the fob, but as a previous poster says, it takes quite a press to open the trunk. This has happened to me 2 or so times so far. Bought my 2008 at the end of March.

I'll keep a record of this to present to the dealer.

2003 Speedometer & Odometer by monkey_penny

Hi, My speedometer and odometer stopped working. The odometer still displays the milelage at the point that it stopped. Does this sound like a speed sensor problem, or something else? How easy is it for a novice (it's my son's first car) to find and replace the sensor, if that's the problem. Specific advice as to the sensor's location and how to reach it is appreciated. Thank you.
