You don't seem to have a problem driving it (since you've tested this behavior multiple times), but if you don't want to drive it to the dealer you can call Hyundai Roadside Assistance and have them tow it to the nearest dealer. Please tell us what the dealer says. |

| Regarding the "run-a-way" Sonata that coasted in D or R in a "level?" parking lot. For a while there I was wondering if this discussion was "tongue in cheek" on the original posters part but when he/she started asking if it should be returned to the dealer for repair or a new car in place of this one I began to suspect they were actually serious so here it is... NO the car does not have a defect. The car when placed in any gear other than park will drift if parked on enough of an incline to start it rolling. It doesn't have to be a 60 degree slope to cause it to roll since even what you may perceive as "level" probably has a slight slope or incline. It can be in reverse and drift forward and it can be in drive and drift backward, again depending on the slope and which direction the car is parked with relation to the direction of the slope.. Without the engine running the brakes, steering, and automatic transmission (all of which depend on either vacuum or hydraulic pressure derived from pumps powered by the running engine) will NOT function as you would expect them to work WITH the engine running. With particular regard to the transmission without the engine running it will act as though it was in neutral...it will not function...it WILL coast without hydraulic pressure... in any gear. There is most likely nothing wrong here and I for one am ready to move on. Next time simply make sure you have started the car (look at the tach, it should be showing about 700 RPM ) and all will be well....enjoy your new non-faulty 2009 Sonata !!! | |

I have seen some vehicles need as much as a half revolution to lock. It all depends on the number of locking cogs on the internal locking ring. See if you can turn the wheel further than one half turn in either direction. I bet it will lock somewhere before that limit.

Replying to: xfshh (Jun 02, 2008 5:51 pm) Duplicating all the procedures in my post #2529, I found sometimes the car still roll back, but sometimes the car would not move, under the following two conditions at the same time: a) the key is at the "on" position without starting the engine; b) shift the gear to "R" and later to "D". As someone here suggested, this morning I stepped on the brake Especially hard. The car stopped rolling. I will try several times more later today to make sure this Always works and let you know. The most important thing to everyone of us is that the brake always works, no matter with or without power. However, my experience as I can duplicate the rolling back phenomenon warns us that if the driver doesn not pay attention, unintentional rolling back and hitting other object (car/people) could happen, while your engine is NOT on. So always be alert!! My question to the manufacturer is: Why does Hyundai allow shifting the gear while the engine is NOT started? Also, are the "accessory" and "on" position for the ignition key redundant? And dangerous (due to the fact of my experience)? I may ask the dealer later this week about this problem and provide their answers for your information.

Replying to: xfshh (Jun 04, 2008 11:34 am) The Accessory and On postions are not redundant. If you will sit in your car with the emergency brake applied so that you don't roll anywhere you can find out the difference between the two positions. It's usually things such as a/c, headlights, it depends on the car, so I can't tell you exactly, but you seem like a smart person, so I'm sure you can figure it out if, in fact, the manual does not spell it out. Personally, I think it's time we all crossed this bridge now, so to speak. |
