Having idle problem, vibration, and noise (vehicle sounds like a diesel) with my 2004 Hyundai Sonata with 50,000 milies. Problem arose about 6 weeks+ ago and I've been told by dealer and Hyudai Consumer Affairs that this is normal. Problem appears to be getting worse. Have brought it back to dealer twice. Replaced engine belts......no help; changed to lighter grade oil........no help. It's now being recommended I change timing belt??? Oil additives and fuel treatments have done nothing. I'm curious as to what has happened with you.

$475.00. The same price that the later dealer quoted me.
My problem: how could I have needed it at 90000 miles when it was done at 77000 miles!!
Guessing that service is not that frequently!

Yeah, shouldn't need same service after only 13,000 miles. My guess is either the first guy charged you for something he didn't do or the second guy was trying to sell you something you didn't need.
I think the owner's manual calls for this service at 90,000 miles. (Would have to check the book) Maybe both were honest and the second guy just went by the displayed milage before looking under the hood (not knowing it was done at 77K).

how do...if it is a slow speed wobble, it could just be an out of round tire

My thoughts exactly. Now, the real question is whether you actually do need the tune up? How would I know? Of course I THINK the car is sluggish on acceleration...thinking no work was actually done. Again, how would I know if I needed it...or do I wait for the next schedule of the tune up, pay up and forget about the whole thing?
What I should have done is confronted the 2nd dealer who didn't write up his 'reccomendation' of needing a tune up, then contact Hyundai and have them sort it all out. But, it was a few dfays before I found the service bill for the 'supposed' tune up...and I was busy at work and didn't make the time to get to the bottom of all this. Guess there's a lesson for me here!
Thanks,
Joe

Do you mean the tire is NO LONGER round? Like maybe it has a FLAT spot? I don't understand.
Another poster inquired about the tires..bought 7/2004 and rated at 30000 miles (had about 55000 miles on car. was getting rady for 60000 mile service so bought tires). Now have 92000 miles. Tires look ok to me but what do I know. Thoughts? Suggestions?

If I understand correctly, you now have approximately 37000 miles on tires that were rated fro 30000??? It might be time for new tires. Remember, your safety ultimately relies upon your tires, something you shouldn't skimp on. Check you tires tread with the penny trick. Stick the penny into a groove with the head in first. If Lincoln's forhead is above the goove, then it's time for new tires. Even if you still have enough tread, you also need to check the condition of the tires, look for cracking in the rubber. Especially the area where the sidewall meets the tread. Have you solved your wobble/vibration problem yet?

The tire purchase bill I found (and remembered!) is the only 1 I have found so far. I agree that the tires are important and I will get new ones if tread trick says I need new tires. What am I saying...if they were rated for 30000 and I have put 37000 miles on then I NEED new tires! I also cannot believe that no mechanic shop has hit me during inspections. Shouldn't they have at least mentioned that I would be needing tires SOON?
This weekend I will have to make time to check all this out.
Wobbling/vibration of steering wheel has not been resolved.

If you're tires are down to the tread wear indicator, that could cause the wobbling you describe. I had that happen once but lived with it since it was an old car that I'd be getting rid of before long. Didn't want to spring for a new set of tires that would cost about as much as I could get when I sold the car.

Thanks. Guess it's time to check the tread depth and the air pressure.
Thanks to everyone who has helped me with this problem.
And I will get new tires real soon.
