#1 of 3 Audi A4 Possible Transmission Fault
Aug 23, 2001 (5:05 pm)
I've been having a problem with my 1999 A4 1.8T Quatro automatic (with only 18,000 miles) for several months. Often, when I bring the car to a stop from a higher speed, the engine will start vibrating. The only way to stop it is to tap on the gas. Also, recently, the engine locked up in first gear once. The dealer has been giving me a runaround. Their most recent solution has been to reset the throttle. I'm beginning to suspect that they are ignoring a serious transmission problem, and trying to wait out the warranty period. Any advice? Specifically, could a problem with the throttle have caused the engine to lock up in first gear?

I own a 1997 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro with 47,000 miles on it. I purchased the car new and have maintained it well. Lately, I've noticed an annoying rattling at lower speeds that sounds like its coming from the wheel wells. I've asked the dealerships to check the engine shield underneath the car as well as the fasteners in the wheel-wells. I was told that everything checked out but the noise still continues leading me to believe it's coming from another source but definitely the front end. The rattle is somewhat high pitched and sounds tight, not loose. Has anyone in the audience experienced a similar problem? IF so, how can I fix the rattle trap on my hands.

Quattro with automatic transmission. I found the car very sluggish at low speeds and sometimes felt like it was locked in 1st gear. The dealership is right by trying to reset the throttle but he problem stems from the engine control module. That needs to be replaced. Suggest that the dealer take a closer look there.
Your transmission should be fine. The message being sent to it is making it function irratically. My car has functioned properly since that repair. Hope this helps.
