Hello, Questions about 96 Aerostar by jkennedyak

Hello, I consulted with Edmunds prior to purchasing my 96 Aerostar AWD Extended van and found the information to be very valuable in choosing the vehicle I ultimately bought. I have had very little trouble with it except for a hung up front brake caliper, replaced both inexpensively and now wonderful. I do have this irritating rattle from the sliding door when I hit the slightest bump and there are a lot of potholed gravel roads here in remote Alaska! Please point me in the direction of someone to give advice. I'm planning to make trip to Anchorage in Novemeber to see dealer but want to make sure it is done right since it is a long trip. Also need advice on getting some heavy duty tires due to potholes and breaking of standard tire's belts. Current size is 215/70/14 and I understand the smallest truck tire is 215/75/14. Is it okay to go to the slightly taller size, or will it rub?

thank you

I'd ask your rattle question over in the Full Sized Vans discussion. There's also an archived Ford Aerostar discussion that pretty much died out. You may want to browse in there - maybe we should move it back to the active discussions and see if there's other interest in the Aerostar?

Also, there's lots of great help about tires over in the Tires, tires, tires discussion, like this post:

I'm a former Anchoragite myself - welcome to Town Hall.

GM van with AWD by vanfamily

We have had a 94 Chev. Lumina minivan and are going to replace it. It had front wheel drive but in snow and mountain driving was not adequate. Will AWD on the Venture/Silhouette make a difference? Is the engine bigger/more powerful? Since AWD is new in 2002, we are looking for feedback from some who might know. Thx

GM van response by avro1

The Venture engine will probably remain the 3.4L 185 hp unit. The Montana has a revised front end that is more appealling, however as a GM guy myself, I find that even a GM person should check EVERY van on the market, because they are so competitive and each van seems to get better. Don't limit yourself to one model and don't go soley by what you hear. Test every van out there and you will Know you have the best van out there for your family. FWD seems adequate in the snow, I live in the snow belt. But our Astro is RWD and we've driven it over 200km in a snow storm. It's basically a question of ALL FOUR tires being snow tires and some proper training (www.youngdrivers.com in Canada is a good one, In usa I beleive top drivers is one, Bondurant is good for advanced skills.) Try a school that teaches advanced defensive driving, you'd be amazed at the difference it makes in your driving. A lot of people rely on AWD without first making themselves a better driver. A car is only as good as the driver. The engine will be more or less powerful then your 94 depending on your engine. The 3.8L IS better then the 3.4L, but the 3.4 IS better then the old 3.1L. Your Chevy will now be steel, so it is no longer as different as it used to be. Also the older van had a more substantial front end to it, which made me feel more secure. But good luck.

Hello, Haven't been to the board since spring 2000 when we bought our Sienna new. Have some thoughts now that we've logged 25,000 miles. Anybody from Maine I'll be happy to share info on dealers and the shopping experience.

Thanks for checking back in. I'm sure the other owners and potential buyers in the Toyota Sienna topic would love to hear your long-term report.

The pains of car shopping! by nvanpelt

Hi All!
Your postings have been informative and entertaining. We're in the process of researching the popular vans currently on the market, of course that includes the Honday Odyssey, which everyone seems to think is so great...people are paying OVER MSRP for this van...I've got to do alot of research. I'm not a compulsive buyer..
any advice out there is welcome!
Unfortunately I've got to play the "trading game" first. I hope I can get a FMV for my car before I even begin negotiating on any van!

Trading in good faith,
Nancy

People paying over MSRP on Ody by afreespirit10

Hi there,

I'm new here, and we're starting the car search this week. It's between the Sienna and the Odyssey.

I also noticed that people are paying over MSRP, according to Edmund's price calculator, on both minivans. At first I thought that was because people weren't negotiating. But, is it because it's such a popular car, demand is driving the price up? Dealers don't have to negotiate down?

Should I even try to negotiate? Please forgive my ignorance. It's not my first time to buy a car, but it's my first time to do research and to learn how to avoid getting ripped off (the way I did last time).

Anyway, so what's the deal with the TMV being higher than the MSRP? Can someone explain this to me?

Thanks!

I am starting to shop for a 2002 Odyssey and I was lost in all numerous messages posted here.
Is anyone can give me a starting point?
We are interested on features, price, comparison between other Van models.

Thank you
