#3537 of 6928 Honda CRV 2002 - Engine problems

Great forum...I see other drivers have suffered issues with their 2002 model CRV.
I live in the UK and bought my first CRV a 1997 model which had to have the ignition barrel replaced unser warranty for a stalling issue. After three impressive years of ownership and no problems I upgraded to the 2002 model in Feb 2005....BIG MISTAKE....
Since purchase I have replaced the alternator ( under warranty), the water pump £285 and now there is a whistling noise from the drivers side wheel arch which my local dealer thinks may be a air con issue althougth air con still works, but after reading these forums I worry it may be the compressor.
Warranty ran out in April 2005 and so I resorted to complaining to Honda UK customer services twice in Sep 2005 with no reply yet.I have logged an issue with the BBC program watchdog who investigate issues such as car manufacturers responsibilitys. The car is working fine except when staionary in traffic and the whistling starts again.I thought Honda's were bomb proof..obviously not..so sorry Honda I will not buy from you again and I am off to buy a Nissan X-trail
#3538 of 6928 Honda CRV 2002 Howling after rotating tires - HELP!
by cyberdiva

I've had this car since it's been new and have not been able to rotate the tires. If the tires are rotated, I get a howling noise when I take my foot OFF the gas when the car reaches about 30 mph and up. I have 37,000 miles on the car and have already gone through one set of tires. Every time I take it to the dealer for service and they forget and rotate the tires, I end up taking it back. The last time after unrotating the tires the car pulled to the left.
The dealer is mystified and I'm frustrated. Has anyone else had this problem?
#3539 of 6928 Shaking and vibrating on 2005

I have a 3 week old CRV2005 with 2000 miles. The shaking and vibrating while it idles is becoming more and more apparent. I feel like I'm sitting in a message chair and the steering wheel is uncomfortable to hold on to. Change rattles...cups shake...my passengers even notice. It doesn't feel "normal" although this is what they (the dealer) tell me it is. While at a full stop the lights dim and brighten several times during a 1 minute stop and the vibration gets worse. It seems to worsen as the engine heats up. No problems of vibration when in motion. What should I do??? Help, Thanks.

Diva, it may be a problem with the circumference of the tire. If one tire is a different circumference then the wheel turns at a different speed and AWD thinks a wheel is slipping and CRV goes into 4 wheel drive. In 4 wheel drive at highway speeds there is a different sounding louder(whine/howl) noise and your gas mileage gets worse. In my 02 first the transmission fluid was replaced-no help. We then measured circumference of tires-one was about 1.5 inches different-replaced 4 tires and the problem went away. You may want to check: http://www.motor-works.com
at top of page click on Tech Tips- then on CRV tire size alert.
good luck, epm1
#3541 of 6928 2005 CR-V Break-in Period, MPG, D3 Gear?

(Sorry for the double post - I posted on the basic CRV owner site, then saw this site! - I changed this post a little bit)
I just bought a 2005EX CR-V Automatic, red w/ivory (really beige) interior. I love this car! I recommend it over the LX. The difference in price is really quite small for what you get. And it just makes the car feel much more like a luxury car. The tinting on the windows is really nice, and although I never thought much about the 6CD changer, now that I have it I find I use it all the time. The sunroof is fantastic - no problems. The only problem is...
The GAS MILEAGE! It is ridiculously low. My first tank of gas I got around 13mpg. How long is the break in period supposed to be? My dealer said 1,000 miles, the 800 Honda number person told me up to 5,000 (!!) miles. My second tank of gas is getting a little bit better gas mileage. I do both local and highway driving. I've been very careful with trying to drive smoothly with not a lot of stop and go. It's not always easy here (i live in Rockland County, a NYC suburb). It's very hilly here, and sometimes when going over the mountains, my car almost feels like there's a brake on somewhere. Is this where that D3 gear comes in? I read the manual, but I want to know if anyone has actually used this gear, how it works, and how the car should feel. Is this something that may be making my car suck down gas? The pickup on my car is fantastic! I know that there are things that factor into the gas mileage, such as tire pressure, air conditioning use, stop and go traffic, hauling something, and carrying a lot of weight. My car is brand new and the tire pressure is fine. I do use the airconditioning. I would say I'm 50/50 as far as stop n. go vs. highway driving goes. I do not haul anything. I have not yet had more than one other person in my car with me, and I don't keep a ton of stuff in the car. Are there any other things that can be affecting it? It's got under 300 miles on it and I've had it for about 3 weeks.
Thanks so much for anyones help!

Get out of D3... Just put your car in Drive, and leave it there...

I've never used the D3!! Thats why I want to know what it is! What does it do? Why does my car feel like I have a brake on when going up the mountain? Am I just not used to the weight of it, coming from driving a sedan? Why am I getting such exceptionally bad gas mileage?

I, too, just got a 2005EX CR-V (also red!). I can't tell you why your gas mileage is bad, just offer a comparison. My first tank was 25 MPG, as was my second. A couple of days ago I went up to the mountains (pacific northwest) and got 29 MPG. I thought I had figured it wrong, but I double-checked. My CR-V only has 1400 miles on it. The one difference is that I haven't been running the air-conditioner much after the first tank. I also had my sunroof cracked open all the way up to the mountains, but I have a visor - or whatever it's called. The only thing that I can suggest - and I have done it with good results - is to call another dealer to ask why, and play innocent. I usually get more help when I play the naive helpless female, but that's another story...
Good luck! It is a great car.

Reading back over your message... You've already filled up twice in less than 300 miles...
After filling up, try running the tank down near empty, then recording your mileage driven and gallons to re-fuel... You can't just estimate it.... Most ultra low mileage readings are from people estimating how much fuel they've used in "half a tank".. that doesn't work...
Also, is your parking brake off?

I don't use the D3 as it keeps the car from going in to higher gears. My salesman said he uses it all the time in residential areas because it keeps the car from going over the speed limit. Is that lame or what? It was something that he kept mentioning, like it was some new, special thing. I do use it when I go down a steep hill (it saves the brakes), or need to keep the wheels from spinning in snow or gravel.
