I'm starting to look at the Elantra. Did your price of $14000 include any rebates? What sold you on the Elantra GT?

Thanks...

yeah the $1500 rebate.

no trade in

We test drove civic, corolla, ION... the elantra had the best performance/price ratio. also, the design striks me as very well thought out. The engine layout is very clean w/ no exposed wire root, compared to sentra & corolla. I think Hyundai is like the Toyota in the early 90s when they made some really outstanding/reliable cars.

05 Elantra GT automatic with leather, sunroof cd, cruise, floor mats, mud flaps.

got it for $14000 in Raleigh NC

is this a good deal?

Seems to me like you got a pretty good deal. Looks like a few hundred dollars below invoice before the $1,500 rebate.

Quoted Price: Should I Continue to Haggle? by twistylocs

I just received a bid from a dealer in the Lower Mainland (Vancouver area) of $21,800 (Canadian) -- out the door price -- for a 2005 GT 5-door A/T w/ sunroof. This includes all taxes, freight/PDI, documentation fees and environmental levies.

This is significantly lower than the bid I got from Open Road Hyundai in Richmond - interestingly enough when I asked them to fax me a signed counter-bid, the salesman refused to do it. Instead he wanted to haggle by phone. An aside: If the salesperson isn't willing to meet a very simple request like "Fax me a quote, I'm not interested in talking about this over the phone", I feel like he doesn't deserve my business.

Since this is the first car I've ever purchased, I'm wondering if I should continue to haggle for a better price, or should I go ahead and take this offer? Also, was I wrong to tell the salesman at Open Road that if he couldn't follow a simple request that I wasn't interested in doing business with him anymore?

I'm still waiting on other bids to come in, but it seems that these days dealers don't seem to be too willing to reply to faxed call-for-bids letters. Out of 6 faxes I sent the other day, so far I've only received one reply.

If you can, maybe try email correspondence. We had good success with that method a year ago when purchasing an Elantra. In addition to sending out email quote requests, we haggled in person at the dealership just a few miles from our house . . . that was a terrible experience. We spent two hours at that place and after all that they still quoted us near MSRP!!! It was a ridiculous waste of time. They handshake agreed to a great price, but then a half hour later when they came back with the paperwork (they just twiddled their thumbs in the back for a half-hour, I'm sure), they effectively said, "oops I made a mistake it's really this price" . . . which was $2,000 more than verbal agreement. Of course they were hoping we'd be impatient and just sign anyway. Disgusted with this tactic, we just got up and left. The sales person wants to haggle with you because they feel they can make more money that way. There's no other reason they'd do it.

For us personally, we'll never again waste time going in person . . . it's so much easier and less time-wasting using remote correspondence. It gives you time to think about the details of their offer without pressure. There is absolutely nothing wrong with you asking for a simple quote. If they don't want to deal that way, don't buy from them. In my opinion, you can seek price quotes however you feel most comfortable.

Decisions, Decisions! by pange04

I am trying to decide between buying a 2005 Hyundai Elantra GT and a 2005 Toyota Corolla LE. It looks like the prices they'll give me (before taxes, etc.) are $12500 for the Elantra and $14000 for the Corolla. This is my first time buying a car. Does anybody have any advice as to which would be the better buy and if these are good prices? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You have to first figure out which factors are important to you before you can say which car is the better buy. For example, if you plan to only keep the car for 2-3 years, the Corolla might be the better buy for you because depreciation on the Elantra over the first few years is particularly steep. It evens out after 4-5 years however. And over a longer time, the Elantra's warranty is a bigger advantage.

Also be sure you have driven both cars on a long test drive. I and others have found the Elantra's seating position is much more comfortable than the Corolla's, which seems to be optimized for short drivers. Also, what is the equipment on both cars and how important are the differences to you? For example, do you really like the leather interior on the GT or is the cloth on the Corolla more to your liking? And do you like the idea of having the versatility of a hatchback on the GT, or do you prefer a sedan? Write down your decision criteria, prioritize them (i.e. which ones can't you live without, which ones are nice-to-have), and see which car comes out on top in a significant way. If neither car really pops to the top in your analysis, then you can go by price.

Thank you so much for your help. I decided to go with the Elantra. I just felt much more comfortable in it. I got it at Fairfax Hyundai for $13885 out the door. Not too bad, right?

If that is based on $12,500 for a GT with no options before tax, license, and fees, that sounds like a solid deal--even moreso if it has any options. But anyway, you are happy with the deal and that is what matters.

North East or Texas by paradox

I'm new to these message boards and would appreciate advice. I'll be moving from CT to Austin, Texas in the beginning of August. I'm planning on buying an Elantra, and am trying to figure out whether it makes more sense to buy it in the North East at the end of July or in Texas sometime in August. Any idea what price I should expect to pay at either location/time? Thanks!
