It's not a question of pep IMO, but it is a compact car and some may like a smoother ride. I find the highway ride of the Elantra is just fine however, and the seats are great for long trips (firm, multi-adjustable).

I agree with backy on this one. I have 114,000 miles behind the wheel of my 2001 GLS Sedan. I have a 60 mile commute -one way- to one of my offices and my 5-speed has more than enough "pep" to get me up the ramp and to cruising speed. I easily get to 80 mph (if needed ) to merge into traffic on the Interstate. Once up to speed and with the cruise set the ride is more than adequate. Granted, I am not driving a luxury sedan, but I didn't pay for one either. I have been seriously considering getting into an '05 Sonata, but I am know also considering a new Elantra due to the outstanding experience with my '01. Maybe a GT Hatchback this time.

The Elantra should be fine on most freeways, Detroit I would have to say is in a special category, 90% + large vehicles driving very fast in usually bad weather. I have not tested my Elantra yet in these conditions and do not plan on it, so I can not be the judge of the freeway pep conditions. They say Lynchburg is one of the largest cities in the US without an Interstate . My suggested earlier point about looking into a larger sedan was based on my preference for heavy freeway driving of a larger, safer and when needed that faster 70-90 pick up that are needed in some regions.[I am originally from Southern California]. Since your family has a larger sedan for when you must go into the Belly of the Beast your probably covered. Take a test drive at your local dealer on the freeway at the speeds you will be needing, its all relative afterall! Just stay out of Detroit! As far as the current deals going on at the dealership I have no idea just have fun -the deal will be realized when it finds you.

Well, if I had to drive in Detroit every day I might go for a larger car too--probably an American car.

I'm originally from Detroit and I survived freeway driving with a 1983 (cough) Ford Escort that barely ran on 2 cylinders, let alone 4. And horsepower? Nah... that thing was powered by squirrels. 5 sick, geriatric squirrels. So you should do just fine with the Elantra.

The luxury brand is supposed to be coming. They are bringing over the Korean market Equus in 2007 or 2008 badged originally as a Hyundai. The full luxury line will follow depending upon the reception that car gets.

OK, at the risk of straying off topic (but responding to a direct question)...if I were in charge of Hyundai, I'd wait to see what the respose to the Azera is before I made any firm plans to bring the Equus over here. The XG did not exactly set the U.S. market on fire. And the luxury car market is very tough. Get the bread-and-butter vehicles right first before heading off into the stratosphere. See if they can sell vehicles in the upper $20s (Azera, loaded 7-passenger Santa Fe) first.

Great idea, but the problem with that is their production cycle. Their luxury cars are set to be restyled in 2007 and 2008. So if they don't bring them then, they will either have to wait an entire product cycle or bring over dated technology in a very competitive segment.
Lets stay on topic: They will cost more than an Elantra.
