Here is their summary:   The Elantra is a pleasant small sedan with a comfortable ride and low road noise, but it still isn't as agile as a Mazda3 or Honda Civic. The engine booms at high revs but returns good fuel economy at 27 mpg overall. The relatively roomy interior is put together nicely. Controls are simple. It also has more standard safety equipment than some competitors. ESC is standard on the SE trim and, combined with wider tires, makes the car very secure. IIHS offset-crash results for the sedan are good, but side-crash scores are only marginal. Reliability has been well above average. A wagon version called the Touring arrives in early 2009. Used to be they would not even recommend a car with less than an "average" IIHS test score. Then they added a second-level recommendation. Now they don't seem to care any more. Civic has higher fuel economy, better handling, ESC standard on some trims (just like the Elantra there), and all "Good" IIHS crash test scores. And the same numerical test score from CR as the Elantra SE (MT Civic), and higher than the Elantra GLS (AT Civic). But the Elantra is their top pick. Interesting. Maybe they are making up for all those years they ignored Hyundai.

Yesterday I got an 08 elantra GLS (pzev)   -automatic -carbon grey -popular equipment package -cargo mat -bluetooth   for 12,502 OTD   I felt like I got a good deal, am I wrong?   PS I am in the boston area   trade/tax title etc basically offset each other exactly. I have browsed many of these pages and have found prices for Elantra GLEs with PEP ranging between 12k and 14k OTD and I am wondering if all of these really low prices include trade-in. I won't have a trade (old car totalled), so I wonder if these prices are possible for me(?).

Replying to: bis2 (Mar 01, 2009 1:11 pm) Can't exactly say with all the details, but if your trade was a 10 yr old junker worth about $1100 trade in (tax and tag in boston?) and you paid 12500 for the 08 17300 msrp gls auto that is an OK deal.   I believe the trade in on a 08 model used like yours with avg miles is about $10000. So for a new 08 your deal is OK. .....today in southern Ohio for 15,900 OTD with no trade. Sticker was 17,040 so I think I did OK. Has the popular equipment package. The price was 14,600 before 7% tax, and fees. They still had 4-5 '08s in stock as of this morning, but with the great spring weather, there were many buyers in the showroom, and I think they unloaded most of them today.   We were "this close" to buying a corollla, but, ultimately, the $2K price gap swayed us to the Elantra. The OTD price for the corolla was 17,900. After test-driving both cars, it is my opinion that the elantra is a less "refined" car, but still a very good one. How much of the fees went to the government and how much to the dealer. (Dealer fees should be added to the price of the car to see what was really paid to the dealer.)
