Paid EXACTLY $15,000 for a NEW 2008 Hyundai Elantra GLS. According to Edmunds I did 'OK'. Tried to go lower but...didn't quite work out. Satisfied though at the $15000 figure.

New 2008 Elantra SE, Salem NH, $15K by desrod4661

Just bought a new 2008 Elantra SE, Auto Tranny, Gray with BluTooth, in Salem NH for $15K delivered. The dealer still has a bunch of new 2008 GLS, but I had to get the SE as my daughter's going to be driving it and I had to have the stabiity control for her. Anyway, took some competition from a nearby dealer to get to the $15K price (of course the losing dealer said they'd go lower, AFTER I chose to commit with the winner). Anyway, happy with the price, happy with the deal as well as the dealer I bought from...

GLS or SE? by jbratter

Looks like the 2008's are going for very good prices. My dealer in Denville, NJ said they are looking to move them all by 2/28. Around $13K for the gls before ttl, around $14K out the door.

Is the traction control the only significant feature on the SE that's not on the GLS? Is it worth an extra thousand?

Also, is it true that the 2009's are exactly the same as the 2008's?

The 2008 SE has over the GLS w/preferred package: ESC with traction control, 16" five-spoke alloys (vs. 15" steel wheels on GLS), telescopic steering column, leather-covered wheel and shifter, trip computer with mpg meter, and maybe some things I'm forgetting. Definitely worth an extra $1000 or so IMO.

Consumer Reports recommended only the SE as its car of the year in its class due to the traction control.

thanks! This car is for my mom, who is in her 80's. She doesn't drive in the snow or ice, but I think I'd feel pretty crappy if something ever did happen that the esc or traction could have prevented.

Actually, it was partly due to the SE's standard electronic stability control, not traction control.

I predict when the CR April 2009 Auto Issue comes out next week, the Elantra SE will no longer be CR's "top pick" in its class, due to the "marginal" score it got on the IIHS side impact test. CR doesn't give its top-tier recommendation to cars that don't fare well in crash tests. That test wasn't published when CR made the Elantra SE its top pick for small cars last year. More small cars have ESC standard or widely available now, and most have better crash test scores than the Elantra.

Consumer Reports: 10 best cars
Small sedan: Hyundai Elantra SE
Small sedan: Hyundai Elantra SE
Check out the Hyundai Elantra on AOL Autos
Price: $17,020
Fuel economy: 33 highway; 24 city
Test score: 82

The Elantra may be less exciting than other cars, but it makes up for it in reliability and in safety equipment, Consumer Reports says.

Hyundai now makes some of the most dependable cars on the market, including this one, according to the magazine's data.

Is this the asessment from the 2009 Consumer Reports Annual Auto Issue (April 2009), or from earlier? That issue may not even be on newsstands yet. It wasn't as of yesterday evening, anyway.

Backy, I just checked out the online CR April issue and the Elantra SE is still their top pick in small cars. Here is their summary:

The Elantra is a pleasant small sedan with a comfortable ride and low road noise, but it still isn't as agile as a Mazda3 or Honda Civic. The engine booms at high revs but returns good fuel economy at 27 mpg overall. The relatively roomy interior is put together nicely. Controls are simple. It also has more standard safety equipment than some competitors. ESC is standard on the SE trim and, combined with wider tires, makes the car very secure. IIHS offset-crash results for the sedan are good, but side-crash scores are only marginal. Reliability has been well above average. A wagon version called the Touring arrives in early 2009.
