hello, im new to the forum and doing some car shopping. i need a basic car for commuting and im trying to get the most car for the dollar. the elantra is one of my candidates. i this from Maxon Hyundai-Mazda (in NJ): "The 2008 Hyundai Elantra SE, MSRP is $17,845, Invoice is $17,297 You can puchase this car for $15,297. Includes $1,500 rebate. . (includes destination)" is this a good deal? any differences between an 08 and 09? im paying cash and hoping to get a car by the end of the month. thanks for reading!

Replying to: ogurek (Dec 12, 2008 1:03 pm) The 2009 Elantra SE will get some minor changes, including a USB/iPod jack and a sport-tuned suspension. However, those features are "late availability", so it's likely there aren't any 2009 SEs at dealers yet with those features--meaning they would be the same as the 2008s, except with a higher price (and lower rebates). Since you are in NJ, you might check with some other NJ dealers like Towne Hyundai to see if they can beat this deal. |

Replying to: ogurek (Dec 12, 2008 1:03 pm) Their present doc. fee is $249 (up from $189 last year). If you don't want window etching tell them up front. They normally add this at a cost of $199. This is a great dealership and they sell a lot of cars. I heard yesterday that they sold a few more cars in Nov. '08 than they did in Nov. '07. With auto sales for all manufacturers way down, it's unusual to hear of a high volume dealership actually selling more cars. I'm in CT. After we bought from Towne in Feb. '07, we recommended them to others and know of at least 7 other sales from people in our area. |

thanks for replying to my post. i just went to the towne website and asked them to beat the 15,300 price. great to hear that they are a reputable dealer. it would be nice to have the 'USB/iPod jack and a sport-tuned suspension' but since the base radio plays mp3s its not a big problem. i currently drive a 06 corolla so i dont really have sports-like expectations. im hoping to get a great deal because of the timing, december being a slow month and car sales being down in general. does anyone have experience buying from carsdirect.com?

A heads-up to those shopping for an Elantra. I have found that prices for used 2007-8 Elantras have plunged about $2000-2500 over the past 3 months. For example, I am starting to see 2007 Elantra GLS automatics in excellent condition, some loaded with moonroof, with between 30k-42k miles and remainder of the 5-year factory warranty, for under $10,000 now. That was unheard of just a month ago, and 3 months ago prices were at least $2000-2500 higher for comparable cars. I've been re-looking at used Elantra (and Sonata) prices lately because I decided that while I love the 2000 328Ci I got on Oct. 1, it isn't the best car for where I am right now. So back to the original plan, a gently used Elantra or Sonata (or maybe a Mazda6) with a lot of factory warranty left that I could trade my 328Ci for even-up. The value of just about every kind of car seems to have plunged over the past 3 months, including my 328Ci, but the Elantra and even Sonata prices are at the point where the trade is realistic. I went to look at a 2007 Elantra GLS with moonroof yesterday, at $9990, with over 3 years of warranty left, but it was sold minutes before I got there. They had a similar GLS on the lot, but no moonroof, priced at $11,300. It was my favorite 2007 Elantra color, Seattle Blue. I asked whether they could let that one go for around $10k, and they said no. Then today the sales rep called me this morning and said the price had been reduced to $9990. Unfortunately, I won't be able to get up there again until the 31st.  (Actually that is true.) But as I am in no hurry to trade and I think prices will continue to fall into next year, I can bide my time. Anyone looking for a good car right now though can pick one up for a real good price. Maybe prices will drop a little more before January 1 during the big year-end sales (for which we will see 2-3 ads on TV every station break).

Having a tough time getting this for my other kid. The internet lady came back with a price of $17.675K otd for the GLS model. My salesman had given me a quote when I bought the Accent of $16.5K otd which is better but not a great price. But I'd take the deal if that was his rock bottom. The kid's not real happy but I told her tough, sometimes we have to settle on one's 1st car due to $ constraints. Hell, The '06 Civic is the 1st car I've ever bought for me where $ wasn't in the equation...i finally got what I really wanted. Right now her $ figure is $16.5K for everything before insurance which isn't a bad ceiling to be at. Gonna check out Nissan and some other dealers within the next couple of weeks. She really loves my Civic especially the digital dash and i've found some low mileage used one's that might be a good alternative, though wifey wants only to look at new. Decisions, decisions! The kid gave me an "attitude" earlier about all this and i let her know very plainly that she needs to suck it up and be happy with whatever we buy for her or she can get a bus pass and there are no "close" routes near us. She did a complete 180 after that and has agreed to test drive the list I've laid out for her. Gonna be fun!!!! The Sandman
