14.5K sounds a little more for SE manual w/o sunroof. Of course I'm comparing with mine..which is auto Transmission SE for 14.7 K. I guess you should be able to get SE manual for 13.8 or so. call a bunch of dealers and let them know that you have a 14k quote from the other guy...can you save me a couple of hundred to drive to you ?

that was my play..

That may be unrealistic now with the 2008 SEs almost gone (zero in my area for example) and only $1000 in general rebates, but you can always give it a shot. At this time of month you might find a dealer who needs to sell a few more cars to make their monthly (and quarterly) sales targets.

Great Deal for Elantra GLS~ by kidroach

I just got my 2004 Hyundai Elantra with 54,000mileage on it for 6841 out the door.

I thought it was a pretty good price to pay since the car seems to be pretty nice. It doesn't seem to be in any accidents prior to my purchase. Although, there were a few minor dents and scratches. It also has cruise control installed, which sure comes in handy when I go for a road trip.

I'm guessing I paid so little cause it's a manual. (I saw that a dealer retail on KBB is above 8000. True Market Value gives a 6700 price tag for dealer retail)

What do you guys think? Is that a good price to pay? (I guess I just wanted to know if I got ripped off, since this was my first time buying a car by myself)

I think that's a good price for a good car, and I think you're right about the price being lower because it's a stick--most folks prefer automatics. But the stick definitely provides better fuel economy on the Elantra. I've had both a stick and automatic Gen 3 Elantra, and the stick was at least 10% better in fuel economy. And was more fun to drive. I have an automatic now, a 2004 GT hatch, and it's been a really good car. I will soon be turning it over to my 2nd son for school.

I think another reason the price is reasonable is because you will be looking at a major service in 6000 miles, for the 60k service which includes a timing belt. That could easily run around $500 or so, so shop around when it comes time.

Yep, that's a problem my dad told me as well. I'm also going to need to change the tire pretty soon. (Probably in the next three months or so, or when winter comes)

I'll probably replace a few stuff as well, along with the timing belt. Then again, I won't be driving a lot so getting to 60k Mileage might take about 6~8 months.

Hi all
I leave in Massachusetts. The dealer near have Sonata 2009 GLs for 15999 ( auto) Is it a good price. Elantra gls + popular for 12999

Is it good to buy Sonata over Elantra because it is a newer model and almost same price as Elantra SE. ( one more reason is Sonata have Electronic stability control )

Thanks all

Yes, those are good prices especially on the Elantra--really great if the Elantra is an automatic. I've seen lower prices on the Sonata, but $16k for a GLS AT is still very good.

Which one? Is it worth a bit more than $3k to you to have the ESC and the extra size and power of the Sonata? Or do you prefer a smaller car?

Its both, There are not many Elantra SEs are in the market. Because of that there is no price advantage. One is last year model other one is new model. Bigger, have similar features and probably more comfortable. --May have better resale value

mileage seems to be not much different ( Elantra may give more by 2 to 3 miles )

If mileage is not a major difference which on would you prefer

The elantra i am getting is automatic + popular package + have mudguards and cargo net i think
Is it worth to add bluetooth ( usually i can get a gps with that feature for same price )

Thanks Again

What I would prefer is irrelevant. It's your money and will be your car. But I will tell you I was quite tempted to jump on a Sonata GLS AT + mats last week when I found out I could get one for just under $14,700 + T&L. But I decided to get a used BMW instead, since I always wanted one, it had all the safety gear I wanted, and was a lot more car than the Sonata for about $2500 less. I do like the Elantra SE due to its more compact exterior size (easier to park and fit in the garage) and more nimble handling, its cool 5-spoke alloys, and some of its other features including telescopic wheel, audio controls on the leather wheel, trip computer, more comfy center armrest, folding mirrors (a real boon in tight parking spaces), fog lamps, and as you noted higher FE. Many of these features are available on the Sonata GLS too, but not on the base unit. The Sonata has its advantages too, of course: more roomy interior and trunk, timing chain vs. belt, more power, bodyside moldings, and USB port to name a few.

Tough choice!

P.S. since the Bluetooth is dealer-installed, you can put it in at any time, or as you said go with a portable nav unit with Bluetooth that would cost about the same as Hyundai's Bluetooth-only option.
