After I posted that last message I decided to see what Fitzmall may have in other locations. Found my "wish list" car on order for delivery at the end of this month to the Fitzmall location in Bethesda, MD. They will ship it for roughly $350. I can't fly up and drive it back for that.

Not sure yet if that's what I'll do, but it's nice to know I have that option.

Does anyone here live in Houston, TX? Why are all the dealers charging 15K+ for a 2008 Elantra auto + A/C + radio? I read that some guy in NY got this for 13K. Right now the car industry is doing terrible in Texas, with Toyota seeing a 24% decline in full-year profits. You’d think they’d be bending over backwards to make deals.

Have you tried yet to go to a Houston dealer with a "firm offer" of $XXk (whatever your target is), tell them you are ready to buy the car from them today if they agree to your offer, and see what happens? Talk is cheap, but money talks.

I finally made up my mind. (Much to my husbands joy..lol)

I could not find any SE's with the options I wanted. Called/emailed/checked inventory of every dealer from Jacksonville to Bradenton, Gainesville to Cocoa, FL.

Fitzmall in Bethesda, MD has on order a Carbon Gray '08 Elantra SE (auto) w/Premium Package + Leather, Rear Spoiler and Carpeted Mats. When it comes in they'll ship it to their Clearwater, FL location for $350, where I'll pick it up.

$20,355 MSRP

$17,135 Internet price (after rebate)
$1,610.38 TT&T
$350 shipping

$19,095.38 Out the door

I left a deposit this morning. I was a little hesitant to by a car sight unseen, but I originally thought I'd have to ship it myself. Fitzmall arranges the shipping to it's dealership which means I get to inspect and drive it before I take delivery.

Also, I discovered that some cars on Fitzmall's Clearwater lot cost more than at the Maryland Fitzmalls. It was a comment in this thread somewhere about how competitive dealers in the DC area are that made me take a look at that. I don't know if that's the reason for the price differences, but it's there just the same. I compared several sets of identical cars at both locations and came up with differences in the $350 to $550 range.

Anyway, if anyone is looking at Fitzmall's Clearwater inventory and they don't have the exact model/color/options combination you want, check out other Fitzmall locations. The price difference might just be enough to offset the cost of shipping, to get what you really want.

In the 2 weeks or so that I've been reading these forums, I have learned A LOT. Thanks to all for your insight and advice! Without it I'd be in a totally different car right now, having 'settled' for what I could find locally in both inventory and price.

Can't wait to pick up my new Hyundai! It's a first Hyundai for me, and my family.

If thats the wholesale kbb.com value (not private party sale) and it is in kbb good condition I would start below that wholesale value and of course seem unenthusiastic.

If it is advertised in a medium where one pays $20 for a 3 day or 2 week ad one has a better chance than for "fishermen" advertising in trader type publications where one can advertise cheaply for months.

Also if serious carfax of of course.

That seems like a good price for a private party sale, depending on condition and how many miles are on the car--what is the mileage and condition?

I'd gotten quotes from all the dealers in Houston for a 2008 Elantra Auto and decided to go to Humble Hyundai to get them to match the lowest quote for out the door, which was already higher than most other regions of the U.S., as indicated by the posts I've seen in this forum.

Prior to going I got both verbal and written confirmation that they would match the out the door price with no extra frills whatsoever from salesman Scott Sanders. As it turns out, when I get there, the car that I want has been extensively used. To the tune of 250 miles! I had planned to buy that day, but the car had been spattered by white bird droppings and they had not even bothered to clean it or detail it! Anyone, I remained unfazed and got ready to negotiate with Scott Sanders for the out the door price we had agreed on. He kept on saying "hey, it's no prob" over and over and then came back with a invoice printout. He then said that he had no problem matching the out the door price of the cheapest dealership in town, but that taxes would apply AFTER that and that his hands were tied on this. I said, no no, that's not my problem, you make it work within the limits of the out of the door price without tacking on even a 1/16 of a penny. I then noticed that this tall grey haired muscular guy had been stalking the hallways. Scott Sanders gave him a cue and he came in and started playing bad cop to Scott's good cop. I didn't get the tall guy's name but he was very rude. He kept on saying, "hey, you gotta' let us make some money, eh?" and talking fast like an auctioneer without letting me get a word in edgewise. They had already tried to jack the price up $700 and they were doing this barefaced game reminiscent of three-card monty! I refused to budge on price and showed both the written and verbal confirmation. Scott Sanders tried to squirm by denying everything he had said previously. I gathered my papers and the big guy suddenly adopted this fake polite voice and said, "Hey mister, mister, how far are we, how far are we? What can we do to earn your business?" I told him that I know that people to have to earn money, but that I expected them to WORK for it, and not pull a bait and switch and SWINDLE people. I got up to leave and all the way back to my car they were screaming at me, "That other place won't have cruise control like we do! They won't have it. Mister! No cruise control!" I got home and reviewed the trims and found out that only the SE shows cruise control as an added option. I was getting the GLS from them.

In short, don't go to Humble Hyundai. They will lie through their teeth and try to get you to hold the bill. It's no wonder their dealership has been sinking through the quagmire for several years.
