He'll survive Hell, even the folks 100+k underwater and paying $3000/mo for their homes will survive (i guess, debtors prison is gone).

If the has problems with the auto folks wait until he runs into the real estate folks. their bs is always much more pricey)

....,but i was firm on my bargain and later the dealer agreed upon the price.I was able to bring home my elantra gls AT,power package for 13400/-I feel sorry for you.

Options for low competition/low availability area (ND/MN)? by fargond

Looking at one in ND. Local dealer is only one within 4-5 hours (Minneapolis has 4 of them I believe, none in other 3 surrounding states to ND).

Best offer from them for Elantra SE Auto base is MSRP+Dest - $2000 in rebates and extra local employer discount = ~$16.0K + TTL = ~$17.1K OTD. And that's requiring them to transfer in, and not in the color we want.

Called a Minneapolis dealer, their best offer using the slightly higher Minnesota Tax (6.5% vs ND 5%) and registration fees was $16,700 OTD for the same color we didn't want but might accept given price. Would adjust downward on settlement to adjust for ND tax/fees so about $16,500 OTD or a bit less.

This is a LOT higher than anyone else seems to be paying OTD. Apparently the SE's are getting very hard to get in any color, silver being impossible. Plus the region gains an extra cost due to low/no competition. This is a lot higher than Towne / Fitz web links that have been previously posted.

Would appreciate anyone's thoughts on options. (We must have an SE for ESB/TC/EBA for winters here, GLS even with PE package not acceptable.)

I bought a GLS Automatic w/ popular equipment in Central Kentucky last week. Looks like I overpaid a little compared to prices I'm seeing here. Thought I got a good deal since it was $300 below Edmund's TMV price. Oh well, this is my first car purchase so I learned a few things going forward. Break down was:

$15,000 Price (After 1500 rebate)
$1073 Tax (Ohio rate-6.5%)
$299 Document and Dealer fee

$16,372 Total

I know its not the best deal but I still love the car. Plus, I'm young (21) so 1-2k is not that much in the long run. Oh well. One thing I leaned is that I hate negotiating.

2008 Elantra GLS (New) by dabears3

I have been shopping around for used Elantras (2007s). I'm in the Chicago area and have been very particular in getting a used 07 for 13K OTD. I have had no success to my surprise considering there is a $1500 rebate on new ones.

Anyways, today I called a local dealer who said they could get me a brand new 08 Elantra for just under 14K with the cheaper popular option package (no sunroof). Considering dealer invoice on these are about 15k, this seems to be a really good deal.

I have a few questions for anyone who wants to help: 1) I have seen some recent posts here talking about a 2k rebate but on the Hyundai website it only says 1.5K. Is there another rebate coming for May that I don't know about?
2) Many local dealers are saying Chicago tax is 9.25% but I thought sales tax is a state amount, not by city. Is this the dealers way of increasing the cost a little bit?
3) Is sales tax included on cost prior to rebate? In other words, should I expect to pay the tax on the 14K cost of the vehicle or the cost before any reductions?
4) Considering the dealership is offering this brand new GLS for $14K - My OTD cost should be approx $15,600 - right?
5) Compared to all the shopping and research I've done for the last month, this seems like a fantastic deal. However, after reading some posts here, it only seems mediocre. Is this the best I can do ($15,600 OTD)?

Thanks in advance for any input.

1) Rebates vary by location. Some states like NJ and NY get a $2000 rebate, others get only $1500.
2) Some cities levy sales tax in addition to state sales tax.
3) The rules for calculating sales tax before or after rebates varies by state. I know in MN sales tax is post-rebates. But other states calculate tax before rebates are deducted. The Web site for the Department of Revenue for your state should state the rules for that. Also any dealer's finance dept. would know, they do the calculation every day.
4) Hard to tell what your OTD price would be since you haven't told us what the tax, license, and other fees would be.
5) No matter how good a deal you get, there will always be someone else who gets a better one.

As I mentioned previously, I got my SE(with unwanted spoiler) for 14850 OTD. I suggest you TowneHall Hyundai in Denville NJ and get a quote like I did. Maybe they will fax you one. You might not be able to get the same price now for the SE with the consumer reports article out for more than a month now.

Thanks for the prompt and thorough reply!!

Sales tax is 9.25% and I'm not sure what title/license is - my guesstimate is $300.

Since TTL varies by state, I guess my real question is this: Is 14K for a brand new 2008 Elantra GLS with popular option package (no sunroof) a good deal?

I thought it was until I started reading these boards. Then I was browsing the Sonata boards (my initial desire was a Sonata but changed due to price) and see that some people are getting new 2008s for 15Kish OTD.

It's starting to look like this varies by state and perhaps various dealerships get better kick-backs from the manufacturer. I know I want either a Sonata or Elantra but since I'm in no hurry, I am determined to get the best deal possible. Living in Chicago seems to be a dis-advantage as far as low cost.

Anyways, thanks for the info!!

If it has an automatic, I'd say it's a pretty good deal, if the $1500 rebate is the only one you qualify for.

One thing to consider is get a quote from Towne Hyundai and use it for negotiating power with your dealer. It's not that far a drive from Towne to Chicago, all freeway, and you could get a cheap one-way flight to LaGuardia. Just a thought.

I just purchased an Elantra GLS in Valley Steam, NY with automatic transmission, Popular Equipment package, mud guards, and floor mats.
Out the door price after $2000 rebate was $13,060.00 plus tax and tags.

OK I have been reading this thread with some interest. We are buying a third car because my wife can't park the truck at work with the narrow parking lanes and I now need the car because I travel alot and gas is going up. So the Elantra seems like an nice compact with a mid-size interior. Everyone is across the board with pricing. Tell me how this sounds.

2008 LE with 5-speed and the Premium Pkg. with sunroof.

Sticker $ 18,265 (they had there added crap with and additional $1k, regional pricing, clean up misc. stuff and made them remove off the price sheet before we even started)

I offered 15k and they countered with $15,677 (they say this is invoice)

This included 2K rebate.

I will need to add 5% sales and about $ 105 in fees.

After seeing some posts it looks like there maybe some better deals out there. No trade and is a cash deal. Anybody know a good dealer in Southwestern PA?
