'06 Elantra GLS (w/ package 02 "premium package") by infinityplus1

Reply
This is my first post but I have been reading through this thread and a few others.

I submitted requests for quotes, over the Net, to four different dealers in my area (Metro Detroit).

Lafontaine Hyundai (Dearborn, MI) was the quickest to reply so I made a trip there and worked with their Internet Sales person. Once they ran my credit check I was passed over to the Sales Manager.

The MSRP I was given for a '06 Elantra GLS 4 dr AT w/ 02 premium package (sunroof, ABS, etc) was $16715.
That seemed a bit high to me.
Hyundai's website has the MSRP as: $15,495

The out the door price was $15,278 (after $1,000 rebate) and I would have gotten a 6.5% APR.

We had initially discussed the GLS Base model and the out the door given to me was $14,108.

In both cases the prices were approx $1,500 - $2,000 more than Edmunds TMV listed. I even had the Edmonds TMV sheet printed out and brought it with me.

I spent about 30 minutes with the Sales Manager and asked him a couple of times if he could do any better on the starting price. He ended up dropping it by $200, which got me to the OTD price I first listed ($15,278)

Edmonds TMV for '06 Elantra GLS (w/ package 02) -$1,000 rebate: $14,550 OTD
Lafontaine Hyundai OTD price for same car: $15,278
Difference: $728

I ended up thanking him for his time and walking, with the possibility of contacting him tomorrow to see if Hyundai has come out with any new incentives on the Elantra.

My main question is why would the MSRP have been so high? Are they just marking that up to begin with?

Also it seems, from reading this thread, that many people are getting the same car or very similar for several thousand less. Is it the area that I am in that is the reason for the higher price or am I reading the prices listed here incorrectly.

Some other trivial info:
Doc fee was $169 or $139.
He mentioned that his Holdback was $449.
MI sales tax is 6%.

Was I being given a good deal or was I right in walking for now?

Thanks for any input.

I punched in the information for a 4-door GLS loaded and got an MSRP of $16,495 (including $580 freight charge) for 48124 zip code. Th $220 difference could be the "promotional fee" that dealers pay their local area dealers association for TV ads and stuff.

Add 6.5% tax to that to get to $17,801, plus your $139 doc fee = $17940 total out-the-door.

Take a $1000 rebate off that and you get about $17k. So they're coming down about $1700; doesn't sound like too bad of a deal to me.

Last year, I paid about $15k out-the-door for my Elantra GLS hatch without the ABS/moonroof (and last year, the premium sound system with door tweeters was not standard). $15,278 sounds like a decent deal to me. You may do better, but not that much better. When I punch all that into Edmunds for TMV I get $15,462, which does NOT include TT&L (which is another $1000+)

That price does NOT include a $1000 rebate (Hyundai doesn't get that information out right away at the beginning of the month), so even if you apply a $1000 rebate to the TMV, then add in TT&L, you're still getting a better deal.

Thank you for the reply and information.
That is good to hear that I was getting a pretty decent deal.

I haven't been in the car buying market for about 5 years so am pretty rusty.

Trading a vehicle for another color by fredvig

A local dealer here in Atlanta found a 5 speed GLS hatchback for me (it's a hard car to find). The price is very good. I know that he had to get this car from another dealer . I was wondering if anyone knows how far (distance-wise) a dealer would search for a vehicle. The car he found for me is Champagne (beige), but I would be much happier with another color. How do these trades work? do dealers only trade with certain dealers? I wonder if the dealer would mind if I looked outside the ATL area (like 100 miles) and if I found another color would he make a trade?

FWIW, and for reference purposes, I paid $13,700 OTD (including Tax, Title, and License in Illinois)last December for my 2006 Elantra GLS 4-door sedan with automatic (no ABS or other packages). I would think you should be able to do better now, given the 2007's will be arriving relatively soon.

If you don't mind driving to the Chicago area, drop the internet sales manager an e-mail at Pugi Hyundai-Mazda-VW in Downers Grove, IL. Their prices are extremely good, and they're also good people.

Having worked for a new car dealer a few days ago, sometimes a dealer prefers working with one dealer on dealer trades. However, this is not normally the case. They do a search through their system for the car and color of your choice, and if the car is within a reasonable distance they can try to initiate a trade. It all depends if the dealer that has your preferred car and color "wants" to do a trade. This is the tough part and at times requires a significant amount of negotiation by your local dealer's sales manager - the person who typically negotiates a dealer trade.

I guess I'll probably end up with the biege. This dealer has bent over backwards (price-wise) to get my business. I know the beige car is already coming from somewhere else (it's the same vehicle another dealer offered me and it wasn't on that dealer's lot either). If it's the hassle you say it is (and I have no reason to doubt that) I really don't think that anyone's going to break their neck negotiating with a dealer 100 miles away just so I can get a different color. I know the car is tough to find in ANY color, and color's not THAT big a issue with me, so maybe I should just be happy that I got a great deal on the model I want from a dealer who's right down the street from my house.

Scoob1,

Just wanted to update you on my search. I changed midstream and decided on a GLS hatch instead of the sedan. These are even harder to find, but the guy at Jim Ellis was able to find me one and the price was $13,957 OTD, which is precisely the difference in the invoice price between the sedan and the hatch, so he really did me right.
So if you're still looking for the sedan, I'm pretty sure they have one left for $13,533 OTD.

I ended up, however, going elsewhere. I wanted the extended warranty (10/10,000 bumper to bumper-I plan on keeping this car for a long time) and they couldn't give me much of a deal on that ($1450), plus the dealer closer to home matched the car price, gave me the ext warranty for $870, and is going to be able to get me a better deal than my 7.2% HSBC Turbo Check. That clinched it for me.

So, aside from not being over the moon about the color (Champagne), I'm very happy with the end result. $13,957 OTD + the ext warranty. I didn't even bother with the trade-in. I'm driving a 1988 Civic with a broken AC compressor (with a SALVAGE title), how much could they possibly give me?

I have to say that the internet guy at Jim Ellis had the best price right out of the box, with no negotiating. His price became the price to beat, and while Iwas waiting for the other show to drop his price was legit. If you're still looking around I would definitely approach them again.

This forum and the whole Edmunds site was incredibly helpful in navigating the jungle of buying a new car. Thanks.

It came down to champagne or electric red for me; I'm glad I got electric red. If you get one of the hatches that has the gray interior, it is really pretty cool- kind of a dark gray canvas with tweed-ish seating surfaces that looks a lot better than the sedan gray or beige. The beige hatch interior is the same bland-looking one from the sedan. If there's *any* way to get a hatch with a gray interior (electric red, tidal wave blue, sterling silver or ebony black), you get the cool interior:

The Elantra is no longer a compelling value by gary045

In my local paper the Hyundai dealer has 18 06 Elantras.
As low as $14,430 After $1,000 rebate. That's $2,00 more than I paid for mine in 04.

The local Nissan dealer has 2 06 Sentras "special edition"
auto, ac, cd, with 16" wheels for $12,229. Now that's a compelling value...
