backy: Nope, not gonna happen. have tried a couple of times with no success. Just one of those things ...

Of course, I could always keep the Focus and continue to drive it, but that means that my daughter will continue to drive my Saturn L300. I know it sounds selfish of me, but dog gone it, I bought that car almost 3 years ago and haven't driven it in the past 18 months.

doohickie - sorry, I must have misinterpreted your response to my original post. We bought the Ford mainly because we were at the end of a lease of a Ford Explorer, and Ford sent us a coupon whereby they would pay off the remaining payments of the lease (in our case, over $4000) if we bought or leased another Ford product. So, didn't really do any comparison shopping at the time.

It's getting to that time of year where the family buys a new vehicle. Each November for the past 3 years, we've bought a new car:

11/02 - purchase of 2003 Saturn L300
11/03 - purchase of 2003 Ford Focus ZX5
11/04 - purchase of both a 2004 Saturn VUE AWD V6 and 2001 Saturn L200

I was looking for a used car and after long hours of research I decided I want to buy a used Elantra GT. I missed a really good deal today it was a 2003 Elantra GT Sedan 58K miles for 6500$ out the door. I am really frustrated right now.

I am still looking for a GT, so please help me out. Thanks.

PRICE ALERT $9,988! by macwalters

Now I am ticked off. The dealership where I just bought the Elantra has an ad on TV for '05 Elantras at $9,988. (5 available at this net price, says the ad.) Okay, I know there's gonna be something funky about the cars, if indeed they have one when you get there, but that is some crappy timing. LOL (what else can ya do?)

So, let's see...they must be manual, and maybe are demos. But as far as I know, the most basic Elantra comes with air and power windows, right? Assume they add destination and we're at 10,500. Add tax and license and we're out the door at 11,500. Theoretically, they could let go of an automatic for somewhere around 12,300 OTD.

I'm gonna call them up and see what they tell me. Just be aware, anyone who happens onto this BB, the blow-out time is here. Sheesh.

Okay, got it clarified. This serves as another example of the incredble legal tightrope that the auto dealers like to dance on.

According to the sales manager, this was an old ad from the fat rebate days, and should not have been running. To his credit (and legal obligation) he offered to find me a car for that price. His story was that the price reflected both the previous rebate and a customer loyalty rebate (neither of which are mentioned in the ad.) I don't know if I believe this story entirely, but it's plausible.

If I were a tort lawyer, I'd be all over these people. Forget the tobacco companies, everyone knows cigarettes will kill you. These jokers also run ads in the paper where you have to get a magnifying glass to read the disclaimer. Stuff like "net cost does not include aftermarket items added by dealer." What a whacko business. If they were K-mart, the lawyers would be all over them.

$9,999 are you out of your Mind? That's the magic price for a base Elantra by miamixt

I brought in the Newspaper, and received the sale price of $10,999 including A/T & Cruise Control on my New 05 Elantra, and that was almost a year ago. Dealers laugh when you bring in the ad. How do they keep it barely legit?. It's a numbers game, and sometimes the number of units sold, not the selling price can work in your favor. Show the Factory that you sold a unit or two at a loss, and this somehow becomes a gain for the Dealership. But whatever you do, don't hire a Tort Lawyer

Torts fall into three general categories: intentional torts (e.g., intentionally hitting a person); negligent torts (causing an accident by failing to obey traffic rules); and strict liability torts (e.g., liability for making and selling defective products.)

O.k my friend just bought their 2005 Elantra GLS 4door with Automatic in white. It has mats and a rear spoiler. MSRP was $15,164. They paid $12,700 (tax not included). The only rebate applied was $500. This Dealer really wanted to push this car out the door he said because it was the end of the month. I didnt get this good of a deal on my car but he gave me a $100 referral fee.

Couple things... by zoomzoomitis

One - those screamer ads do tend to leave off the mileage (demo!). To me, a demo is NOT a new car. It's been driven by various yahoos at various rpm's around various cornering stunts/braking stunts and all with no garantee the engine was warmed up sufficiently for such manuevers. No way. If a car has mileage, it's used and should be priced as such.

Two - off topic a bit but that Focus is built in Mexico, the same country I might add, that brings us the infamous Neon and the numerous versions of VW products. Reliability on these cars? You're kiddin' me. Elantra is built at the same plant that's been producing them for years.

Three - thinking about that "sway bar" doohickie. Our Elantra was purchased for commuting as well (currently 34.9 mpg with slightly less than 3k on the odometer...5spd with no racing right foot). Any side effects (negative) on that DIY install/mod that you can see or feel? Curious. I like you think this car is similar to the cat crossin' the creek...

Still no complaints aside from that radio reception. I know, I know, sounds like a broken record...oh that's right, kids today don't know what a record looked like. Yikes, we are getting dated!

Worth mentioning that a year ago, the rebates were much higher on the Elantra than they are today.

That $12,700 is in line with what I have been advocating as a reasonable target price. I suppose the invoice is a few hundred higher with the spoiler (ugh, good name), so your friend got a very nice price, all b.s. ads aside. Did your friend finance?

Speaking of ads... The local Toyota dealer never advertises, except on a billboard. It's kind of amazing. Business must be very good.

Wasn't sure if tort lawyer was the right term. Whoever it is who sues on false advertising. I would never bother on an individual case like this--it's peanuts. I don't really care that much about my personal deal. Could be better, could be worse. Just in general it seems remarkable what businesses can get away with.
