| I am buying a 05 Honda Accord LX, 4d/4cyl/AT. One New York City dealership is quoting $17,650 (with destination) and another $17,750 (with destination). Is it possible to get a better "legitimate" quote than $17,650? Any pointers? Thanks much for your responses on this forum. | |

I agree with "hondalx05", Rt 22 honda is horrible. The mgmt are have no respect to customers and they use sales tactics from the 1990s. I have no idea how they are still in business. They should understand that consumers now days are much more informed and educated. Anyway, I ended up driving 5 miles south to Planet Honda. I got a great deal on a 05 Accord EX V6 for 22,800 without much haggling. (<15mins) They only thing is Planet Honda asks customers to give tips to sales people since they claim that that sales people do not work under commission. It's hard to believe. Anyone know is this a common practice? Thanks.

(and I thought I'd heard just about everything - truly, the wonders of earthly life are limitless!) I can't imagine someone joining any car dealership's sales team and agreeing to forego his/her rightful sales commissions on the premise that management would encourage customers to "tip" their saleperson. I hope you didn't fall for it. Just what percentage of the purchase price were you asked to cough up as the "tip"? (The only tip I'd offer a car salesman would be to plant his corn early next spring.)

It seems to me that while there's great push to get the leftover 05s out the door, the great real price increase on the 06s have pulled some of the 05 prices up as well. I went to the dealer from which I bought my LX from 6 years ago and couldn't believe they stooped to the "market adjustment" price increase scheme of other area dealers. On all 06 Accord and Civics they added a $1,995 market adjustment and to make it worse added: $199 for mudguards, $100 for wheel locks and even charged $15 for the state inspection (all of which are normally free at this dealer). So of course a slightly discounted 05 looks like a great bargain compared to the ridiculous 06 prices but I have a feeling the great deals of a couple of months ago are gone. Biker, who can't believe anyone would pay $2200+ over sticker for any car, much less a Civic/Accord.

Okay, so after doing my homework on this forum, and getting muttiple competing offers, I went to Bayridge Honda in Brooklyn, NY. The sales agent brought the sales manager to deal with me, and after some back-and-forth, they offered a Honda Accord, LX, 4dr/4-cyl/AT for $17,756 (with destination). They offered only one color (not my top choice), wanted me to put a deposit on the car, without having shown the actual vehicle. I declined to do so and asked to see the exact car. They asked me to come in next morning. Next morning, they show me the car, let me test drive it, etc. Next, the sales agent prerapres all the paperwork, meanwhile I order my new insurance. Now a new sales manager appears with the sales agent informing me that the dealership is unable to honor $17,756, that it is too good a deal that his daughter could not get couple of weeks ago. Essentially, at this point the guy wanted me to shell out an additioal $250. At which point I collected all my documents from them and walked out of the dealership. Beware of these dealers who suck you in spending 4 to 5 hours into a deal and then back out. First thing, have them committ to a price in writing with manager's signature. This was my first trip to a dealership ever so I learnt a lesson for my next trip to a dealership But beware of this bunch of morons, disrepectful, and shady sales personnel at Bayridge Honda.

Thanks to all forum posters. Reading the posts gave me what I needed for this deal last week. Herb Chambers, Seekonk, MA quoted me over the phone $16,850 in Desert Mist Metallic (my choice of colors) 2005 LX w/M. I went in the next day and closed the deal in less than 30 minutes after viewing the car (47 miles on it). Out the door a couple days later for a few dollars less than $18,000 (5% tax, $200 doc fees, $29 inspection). One thing I learned...if you are thinking about changing what you were quoted over the phone...you are right back to just dropping into the showroom. When I asked how much more for an automatic the sales manager mentioned $1500. That's even though they had dozens in stock. So decide exactly what you want when you make the call and get quoted for a specific car and specific deal. Thanks again...Bob M. |
