I wanted to share my experience with this forum since I've relied on the member posts so heavily during the last couple of days: Date of purchase: May 31, 2008 Color/Model: Basque Red Pearl; Accord EX-L V6 (no navi) Mileage: 233 Dealer: Honda Cars of Rock Hill (South Carolina; part of the Rick Hendrick franchise) Sales Price (includes delivery and accesories listed below): $26,500 * incl. wheel locks, mudflaps, rear deck spoiler Documentation prep: $399 Sales Tax (flat fee in South Carolina): $300 Registration fees: $10 Title/Lien fees: $15 * transferred a title/tag from another car we sold, privately, the same day. Total OTD cost: $27,244 One quick note before I go on...Once we had decided to purchase an Accord, my husband called dealerships in Rock Hill, Gastonia, Concord, Charlotte - South Blvd, Columbia, Winston Salem, and Monroe to request "all-in" quotes. When it was all said and done, we were able to get the best deal from Rock Hill, and we liked the salesman to boot. Incidentally, the dealership in Concord was reasonable to work with, but couldn't match the price and really didn't want to deal too much over the phone/email. The South Blvd dealer was completely unreasonable and wouldn't even entertain offering quotes over the phone. There was no way we were purchasing a car there. So, onward: Since we negotiated an out the door (OTD) price, we couldn't care less where the dealer put their profit, so long as it was a number we were comfortable with. But, for those of you that will agonize over such things, they clearly worked it into the document fees in our case. In addition to the final sales price, we purchased: Gap Insurance: $449 7/120k Extended Warranty: $999 Financing: $0 down; 2.9% for 60 months That's it. We love the car and it drives like a dream. My husband will be commuting in it daily and since we plan to keep the car for at least the next 8-10 years (as we do all our vehicles), it's a good thing he likes it so much. Happy hunting!! |

Plus, you always leave money on the table. Dealers will pay you way less than you can get privately. It's totally worth the effort. |

Purchased an 2008 Accord sedan EX-L 4cyl with a manual transmission, in royal blue pearl, in central NC. Details are as follows: MSRP: $25,695 (incl. destination) Price: $22955 (incl. destination) Doc fee: $398 Title: $74 Tax: $688 (3% in NC) Total OTD: $24115 Bought at Auto Park Honda in Cary. A very good experience overall. Deal worked out on email, no surprises at the dealership. |

Replying to: cccompson (May 29, 2008 5:54 pm) FYI...Doc fees are not mandatory fees in most states. Check it out online. They try to make you think they are mandatory, but they are not. In my state, MD, you have the right by law (yes there is a bill written and passed about it) to refuse to pay it. It's listed on the invoice as "not required by law" next to the processing fee price. Think about it....when you go to buy other big purchases like appliances or electronics for example, does the store charge any processing/document fees to punch some numbers into a computer and print it out...no...it's pure profit for the dealer. It's yet another way for them to make money off your deal. And often that processing fee is taxable too. From what I read online, most fees they charge are bogus...just profit. Finance fee/Floorplan fee for getting financing through the dealer? Does your bank or credit union charge this when you get a loan from them? No. Prep fees? Advertising fees?. Did you know that the manufacturer reimburses the dealer for these costs after the car is sold...yet they try to double dip and charge the fees to you. Also, know your credit score before buying a car...some dealers will try to tell you your credit score wasn't high enough to qualify for a certain rate, and they will actually tack on an additional 2-3 percent more than you were actually approved for. I don't know if Honda tries to do this, but it has happened. Just be an informed consumer and try not to get ripped off on fees!! |

Hey, Does anyone know for certain what the current holdback percentage is for Honda? I am finding 3% online including at Edmunds.com, but the dealer is telling me that Honda changed it to 2%....I think he is just full of $%*! and trying to get extra profit off my deal. I cannot find anywhere online where they have "updated" that percentage from 3 to 2%. Thanks. Prompt reply would be appreciated.

Replying to: hhun (Jun 01, 2008 11:01 pm) It changed from 3% to 2% about a year ago. It isn't profit anyway so this really shouldn't matter. |
