I was making a reference to the on going discussions started by WEST concerning the noise when a window is lowered.

My 1989- 98 Olds had Two,one on each rear door frame. when you opened the door you could see the small black grills that covered the openings. They usually are on every vehicle some where to exhaust the stale air that accumulates inside. They draw the air thats coming in from the front through them to the out side.

You must be right about the vw bugs not being vented. I remember riding in one for several miles one time in the winter and I almost choked from the exhaust fumes building up inside.

HVAC people call that membrane a "backdraft damper".

Re: Maint Req'd Light Reset by herzogtum71

They may not be easy to find, but instructions for resetting the system after an oil change are in the owner's manual. I had the oil changed for the first time at 4100 miles, but I reset the system myself because I wasn't sure the technician remembered to do it.

The procedure is pretty straightforward. This is what I remember, but check the manual to confirm it. You have the odometer on the odometer setting rather than either of the trip odometer settings. You turn the key to the on setting while holding in the reset button for the trip odometer. Then the odometer sets itself to zero and flashes, then returns to the actual odometer reading.

After the thing is reset, I think after 4500 miles the maintenance required light is supposed to come on or flash for something like 12 seconds each time you start the car. After 5000 miles it is supposed to come on and stay on.

I don't think there's any way to shut off the light other than to reset the system. The technicians told me, too, that there's no way to program it for anything other than the 4500/5000 interval.

Does the maint req'd light come on after 5,000 only on 2004 models? My 2003's light never comes one and I get my oil changed at 7,000 miles.

Does your owner's manual say you have a light that is supposed to come on when it's time to change the oil? Mine is a 2004. With previous Toyotas -- including a 2003 Matrix -- my dealer always recommended oil change intervals of 3,750 miles. So I expressed surprise when the paperwork that came with the '04 Highlander recommended 5,000 mile intervals. They told me at that time that Toyota was "stretching out" the interval, but I don't know whether the change occurred with the Highlander between the 2003 and 2004 model years.

My service technician told me you can't always tell if the reset procedure works. But in my experience it was clear that it worked. So Omygosh, if you tried the reset procedure, and it worked as the manual describes but your light still is on, you should have them check it. It could be a short circuit, or there may be something defective about the computer chip that controls this part of the odometer.

Some build quality thoughts by wain

Comparing 1994 Camry with 2004 Highlander (I like my Highlander a lot, but I think Toyota has cheapened the product)– build differences to me are:

1. Factory Front Floor mats – weigh 3.5 pounds each in the 94. Weigh 2.25 pounds in the 04 – very thin in the 04.
2. Rear view mirror is on a metal post on the 94. It is glued onto the W/S in the 04. Will probably fall off in 5 years.
3. Gas cap only has two lugs on it such that to put it in the door holder, you have to line up the two lugs with the holder(dumb) the 1994 gas cap fits in the holder any which way. Toyota probably saved all of 10 cents on this one.
4. Fuel release lever is 1/2 the size of the 94 (smaller on 2040)
5. Passenger side window switches are smaller.
6. I did not have a keyless remote in the 1994 but the 2004 remote is very sensitive, when I put it in my pocket it frequently beeps the lock or unlock function. Toyota screwed that up – very little button movement will set it off. My mom’s Buick you have to push it down almost 1/8 inch. Least the Toy has a chirp noise – the Buick and most Fords blow the horn. Bad in a city.

No vehicle is perfect. I have a 2001 Highlander V6 4x4 and my main problem continues to be with the brake system. I was considering another Highlander, but recently bought a Mitsubishi Endeavor XLS. We frequently travel back and forth from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Grantham, New Hampshire. The round trip is 800 miles. I would take the Endeavor over the Highlander on this trip any day. The Endeavor using 87 - 89 octane switching off gives me 25 - 28 miles to the gallon measured by my Bell electronic monitor. My Highlander won't come near that. When I turn on my iPod and hear the music on the Endeavor's Infinity sound system Highlander can not compare even with the JBL. My Endeavor's 17' wheels give a much better ride and handling than my Highlander. My instrument lighting on the Endeavor is a pleasing blue the Highlander is definitely not pleasing. The Highlander may have a slightly better transmission than the Endeavor, but when you learn how to sport shift the Endeavor it is incredible Comparing the paint jobs on both vehicles the Highlander appears to have been done by my granddaughters day care class on a bad day. To keep the finish on the Highlander looking good it requires waxing, lots of frequent waxing. I also like that the Endeavor has the split tail gate so I can insert items through the window section. The sun roof on my Endeavor is definitely quieter. The center console and glove compartment are huge and well thought out. Mitsubishi did screw up on the placement of the front 12 volt connectors they should have been placed on the dash under the radio. Mitsubishi does give 12 volt accessibility on the back of the console and in two places in the very back of the vehicle. The Endeavor has wonderfully placed cup holders and tons of useful storage space. A flaw on the Endeavor is that there is not a locking gas filler cap.
