Ripped off? No way. I think its a very good deal. For the same car, my lease in NE ohio would have been $379+taxes. I have a metallic paint, conv package and same configuration as yours but pay $470 for 18k miles per year.
Enjoy your car and happy holidays!!!

If its with taxes, then its good deal but I would question 1800 down.

Turn-In or Buy? by newt250

All,

My 2003 A4 1.8T is coming of lease in February. I have gone significantly over mileage (60k Total) and am facing a penalty of $3k on turn in. I have a buy it price of 14,900. According to my searches online, the value of the car is higher than the buy price. Would I do better to buy it and sell it to another dealer/3rd party? According to my calculations, I think so, but I wanted to get others opinions. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't guess about the value.... Go to your local Audi dealer right now... Ask for the used car manager, and ask him what he would offer to buy your car. If you like the number, be prepared to call a cab!

I really doubt your car is worth the buy-out price, but you might get an offer that will mitigate some of your turn-in costs.. I'd take any trade-in offer immediately that saved $1000 or more.

In most states, if you buy the car, and then re-sell it to an individual, you'll have to pay sales tax on it first. That would effectively eat up any cost savings. I highly recommend against doing that.

Good luck!

EDIT: $14,900 for a 60K '03 Audi A4 1.8? Is it Quattro? Even if it is, I don't think I'd pay $14,900 for it... But, you've been driving it.. Do you want to keep it?

I don't really want to keep it. Kelly Blue Book estimated trade-in value is $12,975 and NADA is showing $16,425. So I guessing I can get something in between the two. Factoring sales tax into the deal, it look like I would be into the car for about $15,800. So based on your feedback, if I can get somebody to pay me ~14-15k it would make sense to purchase since I avoid the $3k in penalties. I'm still going to lose some money, but not as much. Am I thinking about this correctly?

The problem with buying it to re-sell... is that inbetween the two transactions, the buyer could back out on you.. and you could be stuck with a car that you don't want..

I wouldn't attempt to do anything but sell it to a dealer... Find out the payoff (without sales tax), then solicit offers from Audi dealers or CarMax...

12,975 is for the car in fair condition?
Recently I had the same issue with my BMW. I ended up paying the lease penalties rather than trading it in. Your situation could be different though.
There was only 1 dealer who could match with KBB. Rest of them were quoting below KBB, even if I wantd to trade it in with a new car. Some car dealers would point you towards the auction prices as well; They might be lower than KBB.
I would suggest to take the car and get quote from couple of dealers who would purchase it, so that you would have ball park estimate of your profit.

kyfdx makes a good point regarding taxes.
