Possible Purchase by twinrotts

Have my eye on 98 A4 1.8T Quatro with 76 K. Car has the Sports package and an aftermarket 10 CD changer, 5 spd auto/tip.
Some body moldings need replacing plus a chip in windshield. Small rust spot on hood will require total hood repaint. Has not had the timing belt done yet. Drivers sideview is discolored and need replacing.
Is this car worth $7700?

I am currently looking at a new vehicle and I have been offered 7500 for my trade, which is:

1999.5 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro w/80K. I believe it has the Sport package(how do I confirm this?) and it's an auto/tip. It's black/tan leather and the exterior/interior are is excellent condition.

If I sold mine privately I would ask 10k. So I guess 7700 for the 1.8T is a little high, but not too out of line. The reconditioning is going to cost you 1000-1500 though, making the deal only 800-1300 better than mine. Plus I have the v6 and its a year newer.

I don't know if that helps much, but I thought I'd share.

I do not like the new steering. I am familiar with leasing Audis.

The new 2005.5 ride quality is better but the car is definitely less sporty.

I prefer the 2004 and the 2005 versions over the 2005.5 version. The 2005.5 looks great and the ride quality is excellant. It just feels more like a cadillac than a traditional Audi.

I also prefer the 1.8CVT over the 3.0CVT. As far as quattro is concerned the new 2.0 is better because of the additional power over the 1.8.

When I leased the 05 (wife actually), another salesmen was trying to sell me on the new model. I was not paying him much attention, but he did mention the "new" steering and how it adapts to the speed of the vehicle. Meaning it's more or less responsive depending on how fast you are driving. Don't quote me but the faster you drive the less responsive it is??? and vise versa??? I think it would the opposite but for some reason I recall him saying otherwise. Since I did not test drive the car, they did not have one ready, and you did. Can you confirm this? Maybe that's why you feel as if it drives like a Caddy.

As far as power (HP) the 1.8T actually is rated between 150hp-225hp depending on what model it is in, Audi/VW. I've heard of many Audi/VW owners who want more HP simple chip their engines. Again it's not something I've personally looked into. Although I believe it changes some of the programming including gear ratios, etc. (hmmmm.....waiting for Mark to jump in here). If I were considering doing this. I would go through the dealership and have them perform any mods for warranty purposes.

The steering in the 2005.5 Audi A4 is called Servotronic steering and in simple terms the steering wheel stiffens in higher speeds and is looser at lower speeds. What that means is you have more control at high speeds and for low speeds such parking, the wheel is looser.

As for chiping an 1.8t engine, what I know is certain chips such as Nuespeed will not automatically void the warranty but if a turbo blows and they find a chip VW Audi will not cover repairs. Now APR makes a chip that passes through the Audi/VW diagnostic machine and is built more for safety then for power and performance and has and awesome warranty. What I recommend, is unless this car is being purchased as a race vehicle, something that is going to make you money, leave it alone until the warranty expires. Also chips automatically void emissions warranty. To get a little more horsepower and better fuel economy, K&N airfilters (properly installed and fitted) are inexpensive........

New to this site. Never posted before and unsure how to post a new message. Need some input on the purchase of the following car and the terms being offered. Here's the car:

2005 1/2 A4 2.0 Auto
Premium and Cold Weather Package
17" wheels
Light wood interior (the metallic int. is ugly)
Cambridge Green

I'm buying this under Audi's Premium Purchase Program with $2000 out of pocket (includes tax, tags, license, which means I'm putting $700 towards the payments) and payments of $422/mo for 39 months. The out the door cost for the car is $32,929 (includes finance charges)

Any help is appreciated.

My Audi Purchase by sojoso

Thought to share my buying experience as well as some thoughts on Audi purchasing...

I bought a 05.5 A4 2.0T Auto Quattro over the weekend: Prem, Cold, Sport packages. Generally, it went very well. MSRP was $35,420, trade in worth $3,800 (KBB) and got $4800 off sticker, for a net discount of about $1000. Smartest thing I did was approach the dealer with a final target price and let them work out what portion was the trade in and what was the discount.

The (very nice) dealer rep I dealt with initially told me that his dealership offered $250 off sticker, and "hey, I've been doing this five years, and these cars sell themselves; but here's $400 off 'cause I'm a nice guy". Don't believe it; there is $2500 between invoice and MSRP, and a buyer can get at least a grand of that (I probably could have gotten more if I was any good at auto price negotiation.)

Remember that there are no dealer holdbacks for Audi, so the spread between MSRP and Invoice is probably more or less accurate of dealer profit. However, you have to look at a given dealerships' inventory turn. The dealership that I bought from sells about 10 A4s per week and has an average inventory age of about 25 days. If you're looking at a dealership that moves a fair number of vehicles, and you are looking at a less popular configuration, they will likely look to unload a less popular car off the lot. Many of these "less popular cars" are the more expensive 3.2L variety, so if you're constrained to the 2.0L (like me) you're liklye stuck.

Also, and as always when buying a new car, don't let the dealership push you into options you don't want. The car that you are looking for, with the options you want, is probably out there some where. Dealerships trade cars all the time, but there are transport costs to doing so. So, a dealer will often give you a huge price break on an car that has an option that you don't want/need, just because they have it on the lot. Why pay $700 for the Bose system if you don't need it, even though that's a $300 discount off the MSRP. Stay firm to your price and your model, and you're likely to get just what you want.

BTW, love driving the A4, even with the smaller engine it cooks pretty good and responds really well. After 24 hours, no complaints yet....
