The reason most of the folks here discuss the pricing of vehicles relative to the invoice rather than the MSRP (or sticker price) is that the invoice, minus any manufacturer to dealer incentives, is the most accurate figure available to reflect how far the dealership can go with the price when dealing with a savvy customer. The sticker price generally represents roughly 11%-13% markup over the factory invoice price of the vehicle. Furthermore, there are additional boxes on the sticker where the dealership can place additional items such as undercoating, regional price adjustments, and dealership installed options.

The list of options you provided for your vehicle had a few that I couldn’t locate here on Edmunds. Perhaps they were dealership installed options. Assuming that the invoice on your vehicle was 88.7% of the MSRP (as it was for the ’04 Limited 4x4 I purchased a couple months ago), the invoice price for the truck was probably close to $40.637.

If you believe what folks on this site say with regard to the prices they are paying for these trucks (generally $500 above invoice for ‘04s – which is what I was paid for mine, plus the bogus regional advertising fee of roughly $300-$350), I would expect that you could have purchased your Sequoia for somewhere around $41,500 (at least in the Chicagoland area or one of the other regions where folks are buying the Sequoias for $500 - $800 above invoice).

Of course this doesn’t mean that you could have done this in Miami, but I believe these prices are only available to people that know what the invoice is and how the game works. Otherwise, when you consider the price of the vehicle to be some number relative to MSRP, shaving $3,000+ seems great, when in fact it really isn’t.

Holdback ?? what is it by gtscot

I've been researching pricing strategies for a couple of weeks now. I thought that Holdback refered to a % of MSRP or Invoice that was NOT invoiced to the dealer (i.e. held back) and therefore was extra unshown revenue that the dealer realizes in the total revenue. Holdbacks + customers price = revenue. So why would a dealer show Holdback as a cost ? as in #451 above?
Also in the Southeast(Fl) there is a delivery of $575, a Admin fee 0f $575 and also a Dealer Fee of $289to $400 all of which really throws Edmunds reported delivery and fees way out the window. Edmunds says delivery in Florida should be -$210.
Can anyone shed any light on this. $1500 in "fees" seems rather high to me.

Can anyone tell me if the 2004 Sequoia SR5 is available with the preferred package (PM). I have talked to about 5 dealerships in SoCal and they all tell me the brochures/websites are incorrect and only cloth seats are available in the SR5.

I have also submitted a request with Carsdirect for a 2004 SR5, gray ext., charcoal int, preferred package, alloy wheel #2, keyless, roof rack, floor mats, and cargo net. Their quote was $32,889 which is thousands less than initial quotes I have received from the local dealers.

Thank you in advance for any help.

My cousin is planning to buy an F/S SUV and so he narrowed it down to the Seq and the Expy. We have a large family and so we have 4 Seq. in our family and so he wants to go different. Can anyone give me hardcore data that will just blow the Expy. out?

Want to buy an '04 Limited 4x4 with DVD, curtain and side air bags, upgraded stereo, rear seat audio, and spoiler. Edmunds invoice is $42,342. TVM is $43,858. Dealer quoted MSRP is $48,097. Without any negotiating the fleet manager gave me a price of $44,075. I am in Northern CA. Any thoughts?

I bought the car at South Coast Toyota in Southern California. I live in San Diego, 1 1/2 hours south of the dealership. Nobody in San Diego would even come close to their price. It was a little far to drive, but well worth it.

Let me know if you need more information!
