prefer standard wagons, not cross-overs by hpulley4

While I much prefer any kind of hatchback to a sedan, I still like tradional wagon designs much more than the tall cross-overs. Anyone who uses a wagon regularly knows that you don't always pile stuff all the way up to the ceiling as it reduces visibility (large boxes are the exception here). With smaller items you have to tie stuff down so it doesn't fly around the passenger compartment. Cross-overs that have high cubic feet numbers but small floor space area in the back are often less useful than wagons which have a good amount of floor area in addition to a large total volume.

I find tall vehicles are less stable than regular car sizes. They are more top heavy and more prone to being pushed by cross-winds. I chose a wagon because I didn't want an SUV so a cross-over isn't for me.

Personally, I was sad to see Saturn's large wagon didn't even get mentioned in the article. More evidence of a poor marketing program for Saturn. This is too bad, as the first-year problems in 2000 are gone and the 2001 and up is a nice, reliable vehicle with a good solid ride and good value for the price.

It's hard to fathom they wrote an article about wagons and did not even mention Subaru. You have the Impreza TS and WRX, Legacy L and GT, and several Outback wagons.

I have a family member who works for Daimler-Chrysler, and he mentioned over Thanksgiving that they are near production on a new wagon. I didn't get many details out of him, but he says it will be built on a Mercedes platform, and figures it will be about 50/50 Mercedes/Chrysler and will be built at the plant just down the road from me. He's promised to get ahold of one for me to try out when they're ready. I'm anxious to see how it stacks up. Wonder if it will be anything like the Mercedes C-Class wagon (but at a price I can afford!)?

Yes, around here there is an ad for one of those luxury wagons from Germany, "value priced at $55, 000" says the ad. Value priced at $55K! Now these are Canadian 'dollars' but still, I think the word value doesn't deserve to be anywhere in such an ad.

In my experience, the words "luxury" and "value-priced" don't really go hand-in-hand. If I'm looking for luxury, I'm not shopping on price, and if I'm looking for a bargain, I'm not shopping for luxury cars.

"It's an ultra-luxe overachiever of a wagon, powered by a ruthlessly motivated beast of an engine."

Read the full story from Edmunds' Concept Car Spotlight: Audi Avantissimo, Audi's Loaded New Dreamboat, by Warren Clarke. What do you think?

is GM going to make the Traverse in '03? by squiredogs

I'm looking for an AWD wagon with some space that doesn't need premium gas. I have a GM rebate, so I was checking out the Vibe and the Aztek. The Aztek almost did it, but I really want a wagon, not a tall tippy SUV. (And I think the restyling is worse) I'm afraid the vibe is more like a Golf hatch than a station wagon. I've always liked the Chevy Traverse concept (6 cy, not too tall, liftglass, good storage). Anyone have any info on any future GM AWD wagons that may be at the auto shows this year? I can't wait much longer...

I'm not a fan of the Aztec, but it did get 4 stars in the rollover ratings the government puts out, the only SUV to ever do so (most get 2 or 3 stars).

Vibe will indeed be a sporty hatch or small wagon, however you prefer to look at it. It should be about the size of a PT Cruiser.

Look at the Vue because the Traverse will share a chassis with the Saturn. I expect it will be very similar, though you can't use your rebate dollars on a Saturn IIRC. Traverse replaces the Tracker in Chevy's line up.
