Richmonder,

I am looking for the same thing as what it appears you purchased. How much of a better deal did you get from Leith Toyota compared to the local dealerships around here. I have offers from Haley and McGeorge but they seem a little high.

Any help you can shed would be much appreciated.

This is the SUV I got below. AWD. Price is from Asheville dealer. No dealer prep fees. Leith sold it for 29,199 with $399 dealer fees ($29,500). They have another one almost identical to the one I bought. It might be the same with out the all weather mats. $2500 lower than the best price in VA. Once I found prices were that much better in NC I didn't worry to much about VA.

If I had to do it again I would do it the same or see if Asheville would meet Leith's price and deliver for $300.

Thanks for the help and all the information on this site. I bought my 08 Highlander this week. I live in VA and went to Jim Barkley Toyota in Asheville for the purchase, due to the better rebates in that region. I used frequent flyer miles to fly to Asheville, they picked my up at the airport and took me to the dealership where I completed the paperwork and a walk through of the car and was on my way w/in an hour. It was a very easy transaction and Jim Barkley was great to deal with, esp my salesman Aaron. Here are the details:

So you're the one that bought the car out from under me! I had called Jim Barkley about that exact car earlier this week, and they told me they had just sold it that morning. So close and yet so far! Congrats on getting the magnetic gray -- those are pretty impossible to find now.

RIchmondguy,

If you buy in Richmond, I've found McGeorge Toyota to be very good to work with. Kenneth Puryear gave me a pretty good price and is a super nice guy. They will be getting all of my service and parts from here on out. I picked up my car yesterday. It took too long but all in all a good experience.

FYI - NC taxes the rebate money and VA doesn't...or at least that is what I was told. So the difference is $150 less than I thought.

Richmonder - if you buy in NC from out of state, you shouldn't be paying taxes; you would pay those in your home state when you register your car. I've been talking to several dealers in NC (I live in MD) and none of them would charge me tax if I bought from them.

Thanks dj_dave. A high ranking VA DMV employee told me that it is OK to pay the dealership in NC and have them send the VA taxes to the DMV in Virginia. I also talked to dealers in NC who were going to do it the way you did. I guess you can do it either way. That's why I wanted to make sure

I might have gotten the part wrong about if in VA you pay TAX on the rebate or not. That might have had to do if you were trading something in (which I didn't do.

Good point, Richmonder. I imagine that the NC dealers living close to the border with VA would probably be taking the tax, since they probably are used to having out of state buyers from VA. I'm coming from MD, on the other hand, which probably is why they automatically just told me that I would pay tax when I registered in MD.

On the tax question, most of the dealers I've been dealing with in MD and VA seemed to apply the rebate before taxes on their quotes, so you are only paying tax on the price after rebate. I had one dealer whose quote applied the rebate after tax, and that seemed weird to me.
