Best thing is to research invoice price yourself (invoice pricing is available at edmunds.com) so you know what dealer cost is as a point of reference, and then go to the internet and get as many quotes as possible for the type of vehicle you're interested in. Go to the dealer that gave you the lowest quote and insist they honor this quote. Edmunds.com also has some useful articles on this topic.

Based on what I've been reading on these boards roughly speaking an excellent price for the vehicle you described would be around $29K, a fair price would be $31.5K, and a terrible price would be $34K. Add $1K to these prices if the vehicle is AWD. (These include all fees except tax title and license.)

Good luck!!

(If there's only one dealer in your area then always bargain up from invoice, never down from MSRP. Remain tightly focused on invoice and resist the temptation to even acknowledge MSRP exists:

Them: "I can give this to you for $2000 off MSRP!"
You: "I want it for invoice,"
Them: "You must be kidding."
You: "Nope, I never kid when it comes to invoice."
Them: "Well, there's no way we can do that -- there's overhead, advertising, TDA, etc."
You: "Well, exactly how much over invoice will I have to pay?"

You're ace in the hole is to never fall in love with a car and always be willing to walk away from the deal!!)

Has anyone bought 2006 HL base model, 6 cyl AWD yet? I don't see it coming into local dealer's (IN) inventory yet.

This morning we drove a 2006 6 cyl HL 4x4 LTD Msrp $35,221, AAA price $31,689. It is the only 4x4 available in all of Dallas. The dealer offered to get us the 2006 6 cyl HL 4x4 base from Amarillo Msrp $30,887, AAA price $27872. The LTD was gorgeous. However, we need a bigger 3rd row as we have 6 adults in the extended family. Also Dallas is 100 degrees everyday in the summer so we need 2nd row A/C. We will probably end up with the Honda Pilot. We currently have all Toyotas-2 Avalons and 1 Camry. Toyotas are great cars!

It's an ok price; a killer deal IMO would be 2K less (this assumes no navigation or entertainment system (can't remember the codes for those); good luck in your negotiating!

I agree. The carsdirect.com price is about 1-1.5k lower than what that dealer offered. If you can find 2005 LTD model now, dealers are giving crazy incentives on those, a few K under invoice.

Good luck.

A few K under invoice? Before or after the rebate? Could you tell us what region is it so that we can use this example during our negotiation?

Thanks.

Before.

Use carsdirect.com. The cars direct price is already 1k+ under invoice. Take them out of the equation and aim for another 1k off. I'm in the northeast region. I already bought my HL last month and just called around to see what's left. Mostly Gold ones are left in the config I wanted.

Now is a great time to get one if you are very open to options.

If you can't find a dealer that beats the carsdirect price, use them. It's free to you.

carsdirect.com does not do business in every state. In some states they are just a referral service just like edmunds or autobytel. In the states that they do sell direct you have to finance and agree to their privacy terms, which in essence is no privacy as they do sell your credit history to others so that you will be deluged with credit card offers and phone calls. being on the "do not call list" will not help either because you have given them permission to call by buying from carsdirect. read their privacy statement.

At this time of year, is it realistic to find an 05 HL base model ? I am looking for and 05 or 06 base model (4 cyl) but with leather. Does the leather package goes on the base HL ?
