I am in market looking for a 2009 EX(new). The honda dealship near my place has a slightly used 2008 EX with just 3500 miles on it. The car has clean record and looks new! I am thinking of buying it instead "if" I can negotiate a good deal. After spending some time with the sales person, here are the numbers. 2008 EX AT with 3500 miles $16000 + Tax. Coming out to ~$17000 Any thoughts? Couldn't decide go for this or new EX? You help/comments are very much needed.

Replying to: spaniel3 (Jan 14, 2009 9:44 pm) either way, it's a honda, resale value is great so don't brood over the price. i got mine for $16.5k and i know someone who got an offer for about $500 cheaper than mine. i'm still content. The only thing i regret is i shoulda waited cuz this 2009 drives the same as my 2000 civic lx auto 4-door and i think my 2000 civic lx gets better mileage than this new car. oh well....i keep telling myself the digital speedometer makes the 2009 worth it...lol. |

I purchased a new 2009 Civic EX Sedan with Automatic Transmission for $18,088 (including destination), plus Tax (7.75% in CA), Title, License, Registration, and Documentation ($55) fees from Diamond Honda in Puente Hills, California. Out the door, it was under $19,800. I was not interested in any of the dealer add-ons such as mud flaps or wheel locks. I had shopped around for pricing through fleet and internet sales including the Costco Auto program, local dealerships, and overstock.com. Shortly after the $500 dealer marketing support incentive took effect this month, overstock.com was offering the model I wanted for $18,185. (Note that the overstock.com price is affected by the ZIP code entered, since it depends on the participating dealers nearby as well as their fluctuations in price). I was planning to purchase from the overstock dealer in Corona, but stopped by Diamond Honda first and was offered a better deal. In terms of customer service, it had seemed okay at the time of making the purchase. When inspecting the car I had noticed that sections of the rubber seal on the door frame were pulling away for two of the doors. The problems with the seals were obvious, especially when comparing them against the corresponding doors which had no such problems. I made sure that the problem was documented and that an appointment was scheduled to correct it. When I went in for the scheduled appointment, the associate service manager took a look at the problem and claimed that there was nothing wrong. For the areas in question, he pulled out a section of the rubber seal and jammed it back in, saying that this type of situation is normal since the seal is not held in place by glue. I noticed that the areas he supposedly 'fixed' immediately began to pull away again, returning to the same state as before. He would not acknowledge that there was a problem, even after I had pointed out that the seals on two of the other doors did not exhibit such issues and that his attempt did nothing to fix it. In the end neither the associate service manager nor the internet sales manager which I had purchased the car from was willing to provide an adequate solution. The issue with the seals is a direct result of defects in workmanship or materials. Assuming that the rubber seal had nothing wrong in terms of materials then it was not installed correctly, thus a problem with workmanship. And assuming that the workmanship to install the rubber seal was performed correctly, then its pulling away is likely the result of defective materials (such as the part being deformed and not fitting correctly). If both the workmanship and materials were sufficient, then all four seals would be free of noticeable problems instead of only two. Overall I am extremely dissatisfied with the poor level of customer service from Diamond Honda's service center, which did absolutely nothing to resolve the issue (the issue was even acknowledged at the time of sale). The level of customer service from the internet sales manager while negotiating the price and completing the purchase was okay; For those considering this dealership, I would recommend either: (1) Buying from another dealer who can match/beat their price and level of customer service during purchase, and which has a service center that will actually solve problems, or (2) Purchasing from this dealer only after performing a thorough inspection of the vehicle to make sure that nothing is wrong (and if anything is wrong whatsoever, insist on a different car in stock), because their service center may not meet any reasonable expectations to fix defects regardless of what is promised. After my experience with Diamond Honda's service department, I now refuse to go back to it. For any maintenance which needs to be performed in the future, I will take my business to one of the other dealerships to see how well their service centers treat customers. While I will not completely rule out this dealership in the future for the purposes of buying a new car, it will only be under consideration if they can provide the lowest price and a vehicle free of defects. Continuing with the topic of dealership experiences, while price shopping I had visited other dealers in Southern California. The fleet/internet sales manager at Metro Honda (Montclair) was friendly and straightforward; while in my case I found a lower price elsewhere, he was reasonable and I would definitely consider that dealership in the future. The internet sales manager at Penske Honda (Ontario) was courteous; but the pricing wasn't really competitive compared to some of the others, despite claims that they could match prices and offer the best deal due to high volume. Rock Honda (Fontana) was one of the biggest wastes of time out of all the dealerships I had visited when comparing prices; Admittedly, I should have asked for their fleet/internet sales manager right from the beginning. I talked with someone who was most likely a regular salesman, and who tried to get me to commit to a specific vehicle number in stock before even before offering a price (and when he did make an offer, it was above Sticker Price). Since I already had offers significantly below Invoice, I decided not to waste any more time and walked out. This forum was a useful resource to me, and I decided to share my experiences as well. Your mileage may vary.

Replying to: sinsd (Jan 24, 2009 10:29 pm) I was originally going to buy a 2009 CIVIC EX Sedan AT just like you did. I am from the same general area as you. What I did was send out internet inquiries to about 5-7 dealerships and talked or emailed back to all of them that responded to me. Some dealerships will ask you what your best offer is, some will give you an offer without any prodding from you. So did your civic have the protection package??? Are the rubber seals the ones one the edge that were installed by the dealer to protect other cars from getting dinged from your doors or something else? For me, I would just as soon as remove those rubber inserts since I never plan on hitting other cars with my doors. As far as service department, if they are the closest to you, I would still consider getting your car serviced by them and see what type of service you get before you shut the door on that option. The people that work at the service department are different from the salesmen and bad service from one might not be the same case with the other. Just a thought. Sincerely
