Civic vs Corolla pricing by civic09

Thanks ruking1 for your input
I would totally disagree with you regarding corolla.
Listen both corolla and civic are very nice cars with comparable mpg in same class. Yes ride is different – but soothing like ride is individual preference. Corolla is softer, bit higher and gives quieter ride with simple controls and good safety equipment. My wife has 09 Corolla LE Automatic and I used couple of times. As far as price - she paid ~ high 14k (which included 1k graduation rebate and 0% for 36 month). Can you get equivalent Civic LX for that price?
I just don’t think Honda can compete with Toyota’s corolla as far as price and financing. I personally found Hondas dealers be much more arrogant than Toyotas. By the way they (Hondas mechanics) will pick on your packets when you go back to service your car: have seen in the past how they overcharged and done unnecessary work at least at two Honda places. At the same time at Toyotas mechanics found to be more transparent. One of the reasons I take my Honda to independent folks now: much cheaper and a lot better service.

But, now days, Toyota is reacting quickly to economic conditions by reducing prices and offering 0%... While Honda continue to loose market share with stubborn pricing techniques and some dishonest dealers. – just my two cents.

I am glad you posted your views ! I am not sure what you "totally disagree with". I did however state my own preference and what I actually did. So yes, compared to the price you paid ( high 14k- I am not sure what high 14 is exactly) but , 1,436 LESS than 14k) and I got close to ZERO for 45 or so months. This was in 04 and the economic situation was not anywhere near as dire.

Again because of great logistic and support services of Toyota (in town) it would have almost been a total no brainer to go with Toyota: IF they would have matched the price and financing. They did not.

So if I were in the market, (and it is conversely a GREAT time to be in the market) shop them both and one CAN pick based on price.

Since that time another local area Honda dealer is/was scheduled to come into the site right next to the Toyota dealer. However, I am sure the current economic situation MIGHT alter the new construction of the Honda dealership.

I went to one of the dealer and he would not go down below 18.2 OTD (including tax, tilte and fee (16.8K + 275.5+6.75%tax). Not sure if this is a good price or I still need to go down.. by the way he told me honda increased 91$ for cars delivered after dec 11. I know it might be a BS. but I know the sales guy for about 5 years now.. Looking for some advice on a fair price on civic.
I also looked at corolla and I got quote of (15.5+275.5+6.75%) including 1K rebate.

Ask the sales guy that you have known for 5 years, if they will match. If not, and if the cars are materially the same (model, etc) , go with what makes sense to you.

In this case, I would go with the Corolla. (16.8-15.5k=) $1.3k buys a LOAD of commute fuel.

( 1.69 per gal, 38 mpg/$1,300= 769 gals= 29,231 miles of commuting. )

" Seems like noone at Honda wants to deal"

I don't think that's it. They just don't feel like selling a great product for less than they paid for it.

Dear "Civic09",

Unfortunately, I read your post too late!!! I ended up at a local dealer in PA, and spent a few hours there. I ended up paying $22,409 ($22,350 + $59 DMV fees) + tax on an '09 Civic EX-L (auto) Sedan with Navi. I also got wheel locks (woo-hoo!!!).

I traded in my 2006 Sonata V6 GLS with 65000 on miles on it - for which I got $6850, That seemed a lot better than the $6000 I expected after posing a trade-in question in the Read World Trade-In Value forum. They originally low-balled me at $5500 for it.

I think I'm happy with the deal. I'm glad that I didn't buy in August/September when these were going for MSRP+.

What do you think of my deal? Should I be happy?

Considering trade in - i think you did well.
Enjoy your Civic - ex-l is nice very nice car.
Just remember you can strach your dollar longer by keeping your civic longer than 2-3 years.
I usually keep them for 7-8 years.
Merry Christmas - Happy New Year
God Bless

OK, I actually went to the dealers yesterday. The snowstorm here in Boston made me the only customer in both dealerships I visited
Here's the breakdown:
Honda VP Automatic 2009, in my choice of color:
15,155 including destination+doc fees+5%tax +registration. They said it was $700 below invoice-I said I don't care. I offered $15200 out the door, paying cash. They refused.
Corolla LE auto 2009: 14,995+doc fees+5% + registration. I offered 14,900 out the door-they refused.
I walked on both dealerships. Disgusted, but not angry.
I'll come back in a week or two.
Happy Holidays to all.

Hopefully you are coming to grips with the fact a car dealer doesn't want to write you a check to take a car off their hands.

Also, for some reason, I've been seeing more and more OTD offers. that's fine but we have no control over tax and license.

You really shouldn't be disgusted. You just need to make an offer that makes financial sense.

Now you are in the spirit and the groove !!! In terms of the pricing you mentioned, I would approach the deal at whatever price under invoice you think is good/fair /whatever. If you want to bail or even confirm what you are doing, for whatever reason, just ask them to show you the actual dealer invoice for that particular car. More than likely they will be loathed to produce it. Then decide.

Just remember they can not do much about the 5% taxation and registration fees. I am guessing the destination charge is not negotiable also. Bottom line is treat them separate.. Doc fees (unless you have some quirky law/s) are to my knowledge, totally negotiable. If I remember correctly I paid like $25.00 doc fees to sit there and listen to the order writer try to up sell me for the time it took to complete the transaction.

I sucked it up a tad because the finance guy had previously given me a tad over 0% APR financing. So over the life of the 45? some odd month loan , the nearest I can calculate, I paid app $260 interest. plus the $25 doc fee.

To me, that made better sense than an all cash deal as it really depends how much income you can generate doing something else with the money you would have paid for the Civic/Corolla.

Not to go too afar off topic, but one year I bought a vehicle on Dec 23, by the time we got down to the actual car (I wanted to see it) it was parked on literally a back dirt lot and TOTALLY dark. So I didn't really notice the real color until I got it home and in the light of the garage. At that time and date, I was also THE ONLY customer in the showroom. Again this is from fuzzy memory, but the salesman had to do the back and forth talk to the manager routine. Well he brings back a piece of paper with a merry xmas written on it and some further price to talk about and I just said the offer is xx,xxx. Do you want to sell this car to me today (dec 23) xx,xxx. so this salesman can bring home his commission? yes/no? merry xmas to you whatever you decide. Then I started to put on my coat. He came back actually pretty quick with a YES!
