Advice on price? by simple9rts

Okay, normally, I know how to barter, haggle...all that stuff. However, I'm really stuck between a rock and a hard place.
My problem is I have the car picked out, and being that it is a white 2008 Civic EX-L, I'm limited to finding a bunch of dealer quotes, as only one dealer, roughly 200 miles away, actually has the car.
So, my question is, what is the best advice on getting a great price on the car along with my trade in?
I've heard it's often contacting the president (owner), the GM, or the internet manager...so they can really eliminate having to pay a commission to a sales person.
I would have to work on trying to find the internet manager's E-Mail address as it is not listed on the dealer's website. But I'm sure if I called the dealer, I could get it.

So, who should I contact? And by what means? E-Mail or phone call?

Secondly, any guesses on what I might be able to get the 2008 EX-L Civic man for?
Keep in mind, it is a manual, and has a sticker price of $20,545 which, to my understanding, already includes destination.

Thanks folks, any advice is good advice!

Simple9rts,

This may go without saying, but I wouldn't give any indication to the dealer that they are the only dealer you're talking to. You lose all negotiating leverage once they know that.

My only other thought is that perhaps you should talk with other dealers. Find the best price without mentioning your color preference. Once you've found a price you're comfortable with, hit them with your color requirement and see if they can get it for you. (This will all be complicated by the fact that you're looking for an '08. What about an '09?)

This essentially is what happened when I bought my Civic. I negotiated everything online (including color). Long story short: The dealer I purchased from had to get the color I wanted from another dealership. (Granted, the other dealership was a lot close than 200 miles!)

Anyway... Hope this helps. Good luck!

Used Civics by indycmgs

I am in the market for a used Civic as a college car for my daughter. I am looking at an 2007 LX with 22K miles for $14955 from a private seller, (no sales tax). My sense is that the market may get better for buyers as the economy tanks. Does that price sound good or should I wait until after the first of the year?

I forgot to mention that I am in the Atlanta area.

Takeittec143,

Looks like you got a good deal on the car, however when reading down the list of charges, the warranty cost seems a little steep.

If you would have purchased the Honda Care Warranty from an online dealer such as Saccucci or Bernardi Honda the cost for a plan covering 7 yrs and 80,000 miles would ONLY have been $575 with zero deductible. That would have been less than the amount you would still pay even with half of the warranty refunded. You could also purchase a plan for 8 yrs and 100,000 miles for $805.

If it were me, I would cancel the present extended warranty--they will credit your account--not give you cash back and purchase from one of the two aforementioned online providers. You can make 12 equal monthly payments if you prefer.

Please be assured I am not trying to stir up trouble, just save you a little money. I bought a Civic and a Ridgeline last year and purchased the Honda Care warranty for both of them over the internet.

Hey Take, and all others!

I will be shopping in Portland, OR

Really? 17.5 for an 09 EX with manual? That is exactly what I am shopping for.

Local Dealer has sent me an opening price of 19.1 + DMV fee's, and that is with my "fabulos" discount I get offered thru an incentive firm I deal with.

Can someone please tell me what the real dealer invoice is on an 09 Civic EX, 2-door, with manual trans?

And what is a "fair" profit to add to that? Three percent?

And does anyone know what new incentives that Honda is going to make effective on DEC 1st?

Also, does anyone know what incentives the dealer gets for selling a car, so I can make that part of my offer?

And thx for all the other info, I have learned a lot already. TY!
