More info - got a quote of $18,693 (includes destination) for 2009 Civic EX.
Doc, title etc is around $400.
MA tax is 5%
So, that comes to around $20,035
Add floor mats, etc probably around $20,500 OTD.
Based on what other people have paid, this looks like a decent price, so will probably move ahead with this.

Doc fees seem as a min 10x higher than they need to be. No matter what they say, it is the price they charge for someone writing up the documents that primarily protect THEM, while giving that person the time to UPSELL you.

How much over invoice does www.edmunds.com indicate you are paying?

Edmunds invoice is $18,424 + $670 destination for total of $19,094.
So the quote I received is $401 *less* than the invoice.

As for doc fess - have people been able to negotiate them out? Most of the messages in this group seem to around $300 for doc fees, then add the title fees, so I thought $400 seemed fine.

Yes, doc fees are negotiable. If I remember correctly mine was $24. I was going to say something, but they had already offered good deals in price, financing and filled the tank.

that sounds pretty good overall - much better than anyone would have expected 90 days ago for a brand new fuel efficient 09 EX civic.

my thought the whole time was if i can get the OTD on an EX automatic with ttl, the 3% tax, and other fees (plus some basic accessories like floormats and mudguards) to $20,000~ on a low apr, i've succeeded and can justify the new car purchase over a used one.

doc fees in NC for most dealers i've talked with are $400, with a couple a bit higher. typically that is the one thing i hear is non-negotiable from all the dealers (they even have big signs in their lobbys that state it is legal here up to a certain amount). just means i've got to negotiate the price of the car that much lower

Price for Honda Civic LX Coupe - Automatic by colbound

The best price I've found so far for a Honda Civic LX Coupe Automatic is $18,804. This includes all fees, destination etc. Is this a good price? Most of the other quotes were in the $19K range. Also, does anyone know the invoice of this model? It's not listed on Kelley Blue Book yet and I can't find it on the internet. The MSRP is $18,625. Thanks!

Agree with Amking about the Fee slapped on in some States. In Florida its $599.00 and absolutely no way to reduce that one. You can with other stuff but not the Doc Fee's in Florida.

Its actually called "Pre-Delivery Service Fee" in Florida and its in Black Bold Type over all other printed numbers on the Sales Contract

For my $599.00, then it makes sense to shop in places that have lower doc fees! Tax and title will still be the same, as the rate is where the car is domiciled anyway. Again this is pretty easy to find out from the git go. Just ask them. If they have what you happen to like, and the doc fee is (still ) high, go to the dealer that has low doc fees and tell them to search the inventory and/or ID the store that has the exact one you happen to want.

Shopping dealer fees is a huge waste of time, way too many other variables in the transaction. Just make sure you know what they are when starting the negotiations and be sure to reduce your offered price by the amount of their dealer fee.
