I know exactly how much the taxes are and if I don't a simple phone call to the Town Clerk will tell me how much my Plates and Title are. The dealer has nothing to do with that. They have a documentation fee and that's it, period. Taxes are YOUR responsibility and have nothing at all to do with the car dealer. You have to pay taxes on your house too and taxes on many other things. Bottom line is this. The price of the car and the price of the dealer fees are the only things that matter. The rest is simple, you have additional fees. A lease is very different but a purchase is straight forward. You paid A - $xx,xxx for the car B - $xxx dealer fees Then your other stuff which varies from state to state and is meaningless unless you live in the same state. So your OTD price for the CAR is A + B = $xx,xxx Since when do taxes have anything to do with it? I don't pay taxes so did I get a better price than you? We'll never know because you claim it's all dealership black magic, but it's not, these are easily knowable things.

Bottom line is just that. There is a price the dealer will not go below, period! This is Edmunds so why don't you click on Edmunds up at the top and then from the main Edmunds page click on new cars and then click on the year and model you want. It will give you 3 prices MSRP, Invoice and TMV For my money Edmunds has been right on about pricing. If the dealer is willing to sell me the car at or below the edmunds Invoice price as sometimes there are incentives, great! I'm buying a car. Some want over MSRP. Oh and since you are nit-picking yes you have to add the destination fee to that invoice price. So let's recap Invoice Destination Dealer fees That's it, period, end of sentence! Taxes are your problem as are TTL. I suppose you could add in that you need to renew your drivers license every so often as well because you need a license to drive, right? That has nothing to do with the car, neither do taxes. Who cares what the dealer paid for the car? What matters is what YOU can buy the car for. Dealers aren't in business to lose money. They didn't build those big fancy showrooms for free. But if you can get a car for below invoice and give the dealer an actual 1% or less profit in the car I'd love to see the actual paperwork. Ain't gonna happen! Have you ever bought a car? Seriously. My point is OTD price should not include taxes or TTL or Insurance or drivers license renewals or anything else. Car Price, destination fee and dealer fee, that's it. Otherwise you can't compare anything since the market is too varied from state to state. |

Let's face it, the out the door price is just that. Maybe not the best comparison for this forum but when buying a car I've always gone in armed with as much info as I could gather and when the salesperson asks "what would it take to put you in that car today?" I am ready with my OTD price. And that would include taxes, destination, advertising, dealer prep, and any other scam that might normally be added on. But for sure they will juggle the numbers on the car price to get to the number so using that price for comparison probably wouldn't be valid.

Replying to: tommc (Jan 29, 2008 8:11 pm) For example: 1. 2000 Nissan Altima 2.4 engine, 4 dr Automatic with overdrive button cruise / audio control variable wipers split seats automatic lock/window/trank etc. Cost me 17K OTD 2. 2008 Civic EX 1.8 engine same assessories plus aluminum will, better audio and sunroof. I will not pay for the Civic EX more than 19k OTD This car is for the beginners or elderly people Nissan with 2.4 is for drivers Civic EX 1.8 is for riders So, your ability to figure out the fair market value can help to make the right choice and assign the right price range for the car - the fair and reasonable OTD value I would go for VW Rabbit with 2.5 5cilinder engine for $19K OTD the car that fun to drive than to ride the Civic EX
