Mazda Protege5, Wagon
Jun 01, 2001 (11:31 am)
nice site with "exclusive" interior 360 views of various cars shown at the 4 major 2001 auto shows..
I'm sure lots of you know about this site but I just found it for the first time today and I was looking for an interior 360 degree view of the US protege5 for months .. Anyhow, as far as production hatchbacks go..
Los Angeles has the 2002(?) Pontiac Vibe and 2002 Mercedes hatchback
Detroit has the 2003 Toyota matrix
Chicago has the Mazda Protege5 (our favorite)
and New York has the 2002 honda civic si and Suzuki Xtreme (SX) (concept but close to 2003?)..
sportwagon/hatchback mania alright!
#468 of 7874 Protege5 roof rack removal information
Jun 02, 2001 (5:30 am)
I would like to remove the roof rack from my Protege5 primarily because of the wind noise when I have the sunroof open. I read that there are some "blanks" or "snap-in covers" that are used to fill in the holes after taking off the roof rack. The messages were specifically from tonyreynol and mazdafun contributors. Could you or anyone else tell me where to get these. My Mazda dealer, service manager and even a Mazda rep never heard of such things.
#469 of 7874 How I purchased my Protege5
Jun 02, 2001 (5:48 am)
First of all I need to thank Edmunds.com for informing me about the then new Protege5 in early April. I just happened to be on that website and saw articles about it. I went to my local Mazda dealer (who also sells Mercedes, BMW, Porsche and Saab--I guess this says something about the class of cars the Mazda comfortably fit in with)
The Mazda sale manager told me that eleven Protege5 would be arriving around the middle of May. On his list was a silver one with auto, sunroof, ABS brakes and side airbags. He said he would hold that one for me--with no obligation. He called me on Thursday, May 17 with the news that six had arrived--including the one reserved for me. I went to look at it on Friday. He wanted me to take it home for the weekend! I said I would be back on Monday to test drive it.
On Monday he let me take it home overnight. I knew this was the car for me after only a few minutes of driving it.
Negotiating a price was next. It listed at $19,195.00. Invoice price was $17,571.00. I asked him how close to invoice price he could get. He said, "$17,571.00!" Needless to say I am now the owner of a 2002 Protege5. I must confess that his wife is my niece. So I know there was somewhat of a family discount given. Then I found out that Mazda had a special financing program at 1.9% for 36 months which I jumped at.
I stopped in last week to thank him and tell him how much I enjoyed the car. He said they sold four of the five others very quickly and kept one for demo purposes. He also said they are now selling at MSRP.
After two fill ups my mpg has been 26.4 and 28.3 respectively.
#470 of 7874 Roof rack "blanks"
Jun 02, 2001 (6:20 am)
The roof rack "blanks" come with the car. At least the demo I drove had a package in the cargo area with black plastic strips, that the dealer noted were for removal of the roof rack. If their not there, check with the dealer.
#471 of 7874 My yellow P5 to arrive sooner than expected
Jun 02, 2001 (8:30 am)
I went to my car dealer on Friday and saw the P5 in person for the first time. I was very pleased. Pictures just don't reveal how nicely it's lines flow. Very nice!
My sales person saw me and informed me he had just called me to let me know my P5 would arrive sooner than expected (first week of July). He even gave me the VIN# with my name tagged to it.
I will have to pay for the moonroof that comes standard with the ABS/side air bags. But I will still pay slightly under MSRP.(see my other postings)
The dealer still is saying there will be very few (about 200) yellow P5s reaching the states because apparently the car has to be sent through the paint process 3 times in order to get good coverage of the "A" and "D" pillars.
They are dealing on the other colors, but informed me they will be asking $2K above MSRP on any other yellow P5s they can get.
I would never pay that much.
They are giving me the 1.9% financing which makes up for having to pay close to MSRP.

For any P5 enthusiasts that have been also watching the MP3, Morries Mazda has one on their lot. I believe it is already sold but they will keep it around for a couple of weeks to show.
They also have Nicholas Cages' yellow Ferrari for sale. I think they will take around $185K to $199K for it (That would be cash only for a heck of deal like that).
I would have considered it (the yellow Ferrari) but there was no cargo room for my mountain bike, so I'll stick with my yellow P5 instead (that and the fact that the Devil doesn't give you much for your soul anymore). Oh well.
Jun 02, 2001 (9:06 am)
Are you sure they still have that yellow Ferrari F355? I was at Morries on tuesday and didn't see it there anymore. Dang it, I just got my loan approved and I was going to buy that thing Why did they have that thing anyway? Morries always seems to have those cool non mazda cars on their showroom floor. They used to have a sixties black mustang. Did you see the old school souped up RX7 they have sitting up on the curb? Walser Mazda in Bloomington also has an MP3.
#474 of 7874 Roof rack plugs.

Yes, they come with the car. They are a bunch of black long plastic bits that come inside a clear poly bag. Usually they toss them into the cargo area. Check to make sure some prep tech didn't hide them in the spare tire well or something to "tidy" up the car for show.
If your dealer forgot to give them to you and lost them, they should replace them for you at their cost.

Wantagh Mazda (Long Island) just got a whole bunch of silver and black 5's in auto. The Protege ES seats are among the most comfortable i've ever checked out. Firm, supportive but not hard. And the interior design is just right. Classy and sporty. Too bad the P5 does'nt come in any shade of green.
#476 of 7874 Advertising
Jun 02, 2001 (1:00 pm)
I haven't yet seen any commercials for the P5 (but then I haven't been watching much TV lately) but today's Toronto Star had a 2 page ad for the P5. Other than a tiny notice on a small dealership ad last week, it is the first advertising that I have seen here for the P5.
