I can tell you what that little square is on the back of the center console, because I used to have a 1992 LX (before my 2000 ES) and they've trimmed down some of the items that used to come standard.
It's a pop-out cover for what USED TO BE a small ashtray for the rear-seat occupants. You'll notice that since smoking is not P.C. anymore, there are no accommodations for smokers in the back seats. I used to like the little ashtray, though, because it offered a place to put gum wrappers and wayward french fries until my next vacuuming!
What are the two things I miss the most from my 1992 Protege that my 2000 Protege doesn't have? I miss the lighted ring around the ignition switch and the low washer fluid warning light. I hear the 2001 model brought these back, dang it ...
And Paul, what are you doing lurking over here? Get your butt back to the Mazda Protege topic where you belong, you four-door imposter!
As long as I'm here, let me re-state my invitation -- we'll be holding the second-annual Mid-Atlantic Protege Picnic in Northern Virginia on Saturday, October 6! Reservations are required! If you're interested, come over to the Mazda Protege topic or e-mail me at:

The 2001 models have the lighted ignition key cylinder, which I love. But it does not come with the rear ashtray or the windshield washer fluid warning light. I wish it did.

Congrats on your new car. Just wanted to note that only the front rack can be reversed. The rear only fits with the groves to the front of the vehicle. However, by reversing the front bar, you'll most certainly eliminate the highly undesirable wind noise.

#1229 of 7874 My car has arrived!
Aug 23, 2001 (7:39 am)
Finally, after 2 months of waiting, my car (silver, 5spd, a/c, moonroof) is here and I'm going to pick it up in a couple hours. Manual transmissions have been so hard to come by. The dealer still has a long list of people there waiting for theirs to arrive. One lone automatic sits in the lot that no one wants here. Will post my thoughts on it after I drive it for a while. Just so happy that the waiting is over at last.

Does anyone know how hard it is to install the roof rack on the p5. Dealer said they need a couple of hours.

We appear to have a few new Pro5 owners the last couple of days--congrats to all of you! They're fun, aren't they?

I picked up a Vivid Yellow Protege5 from Marlin Mazda in Miami on sunday. Automatic, tape player and floor mats were included as options. Love the car. Attracts A LOT of attention, drives great, comfortable and handles like on rails. A little low on power but thats allright.
