Chuck,
I've bought 4 Subarus (3 new, 1 used) from Bob Rafferty (parents bought 2, brother bought 1). I wasn't that impressed with their service on my '89, it was OK on my '93, didn't use them for my '96 (used Roberts in Downingtown). I took my '03 in for warranty service in September and was impressed that they fixed everything that I reported (hestitation on warm start, brake rotors warped, cruise control not working). My parents and brother have had recent service performed at Rafferty's and they were satisfied. I believe they've been an exclusive Subaru dealer since late 2001 / early 2002. They used to also have a Pontiac / GMC franchise. I think the service has improved since then.
There's an independent Subaru specialist on Market St. in West Chester. I think it is Gottier's. I've never used them for service but have spoken to them and have heard they have a good reputation.

Gottier's is mentioned on the CarTalk website as a solid Subaru specialist in the area. I have 33k on the car, so I am still under bumper to bumper warranty, but after that expires I am just as happy to go to an independent.
I have no experience with them other than the purchase of this used 03 Outback, but we will see what comes. The car seems to run hotter than I would expect, and the idle jumps between 500rpm and 1000rpm for reasons I do not understand. I will inquire when it goes back this weekend for some "We Owe" items.
Thanks for the info.

In fact, I'll be there for the 11,250mi oil and filter on Friday, BUT..... its very very not Northern NJ, and even from where I am in central NJ, is a true pain in the arse. Still, that should tell you something about how much I like that dealership's service dept.....I will continue to go there for as long as I can.

#304 of 327 Royal Subaru Review
by p0926

Sorry Eric, no I don't and I sure could use one.
Recently I went to Royal Subaru in Decatur GA for the first time for the 30k service. Previously, I had received fairly good service from Conley Subaru before they were bought by Royal a couple of years ago.
Well Royal Subaru immediately got off on the wrong foot by trying to have me sign a work order agreeing to $400 for the 30k services. There was no "our 30k service costs" or "we recommend the following services be performed at a cost of". Merely a "sign here". When I confronted them with the fact that the services they wanted to perform far exceeded what Subaru recommended, the service rep simply shrugged and said that was their standard 30k service package. In their defense, there was a sign posted that mentioned in small print at the bottom that the dealer recommended following the severe driving maintenance schedule. When I requested that they only perform those services that Subaru specified, the service rep claimed to not even know what those were. I made them go and retrieve the manual from the vehicle and then read off the services that I wanted performed. That got the price down to a more reasonable $275. Then I asked when it would be ready and was told 2 pm. Since it was 8:30 am at the time, I thought that was a long time to perform a relatively simple service but didn't argue as I wasn't going to be waiting. Well, 2 pm came and went and by 4 pm I still hadn't heard anything. Assuming that they had simply forgotten to call, I headed to the dealer around 5 pm only to find out that my Forester still wasn't ready (over 8 hours later!). While I was waiting, I went to the parts dept to order a cabin air filter (sure wasn't going to have them change it) only to find out that they didn't have any in stock.
Needless to say, I won’t be giving Royal Subaru any more of my business.

I just bought a 2001 Subaru Forester through a private party.
I was wondering if any members know of a reputable Subaru mechanic in the Rockville/Bethesda, MD area.
Thanks.

Hey Frank,
Thanks for the info. I've never dealt with their service department, but I test drove an outback there before I bought mine and the guy was helpful enough, but they wouldn't come down on their prices at all.
Incidentally, have you ever dealt with Gwinnett Subaru in ATL? I've heard good things about them, as I'm going to have to take my OBW in for a servicing--CV joint I think. I'm not really satisfied with my experiences at Kelly Subaru in Chattanooga, they never seem to have any part I ask for, so they charge me twice in taking apart and putting back together labor. Uggh! And not only that, once they reversed my washer fluid nozzles and forgot to bolt my washer fluid reservoir back onto the car. Negligence.. Seems like they give more preference to their Hummer and Caddilac customers than Subies.
Hopefully I'll have better luck with Gwinnett.
