I'm trying to replace a battery for my wife's 98 New Beetle. she just so happened to have lost the guide for replacing the battery. Not sure which cable comes off first. If it's a positive or negative grounded car. Hope someone can help out here. Thanks in advance

Transmission wont come out of park by maynardrayne

I have a 2003 diesel beetle that I bought used about a year ago. Recently, I've been having trouble taking the transmission out of park. The light that is seemingly telling me to depress the brake, stays on, not allowing me to pull it out of park. Is there a simple fix to this? Or do I have to take it in and have the folks at VW look at it.

I think its the wiring...cause if I jiggle the key around enough it eventually goes off...but I really don't want to have to deal with this...

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

skmichel: I have a 2001 Beetle GLS and that happened to me within the first month I had it (in 2001). It only happened once. I had it towed to the dealer and they claimed it never happened, because it didn't register in the computer. They actually accused me of lying about it. But it never happened after that. I have, however, heard other Beetle owners talk about it.

Road Trip by oldbug

Just to share with eveyone...I drove to Port Byron, IL (500 miles one way)yesterday to have my '03 Beetle TDI chipped with the Upsolute computer chip. On the trip I noticed a couple of things. On the way there, I noticed that my speedometer had a 5-6 mph differential with the reading on my Magellan Color GPS system. The speedo was consistently slower that the gps. Made sense at the time as when I cruise at the posted limit I am usually the slowest one on the road. Anyone out there having similar disparities? I believe that the wheels and tires are OE. After the chip was installed and even when on the dyno, I noticed black sooty smoke from the exaust at rev-up. I had never noticed this before. On the way home when accelerating to pass, I noticed it too. Is this because the engine is burning fuel more efficiently? I see the diesel big rigs exhibiting the same thing when they accelerate. On the drive home it was like driving a whole new car! The power and torque differential was unbelievable! I feel like a kid again and kept looking in my rear view mirror for flashing red lights! I had the ECU chipped primarily for fuel economy and will find out how my mileage improves in the next couple of tanksful. At the same time while on the dyno-I had them check base line hp and torque and then re-check after the procedure. Base line for my A4 (auto transmission) HP: 74.35, Torque: 138. After the chip and a K&N air filter, HP: 101.9, Torque 202.09. For anyone considering having their diesel chipped and is whithin driving distance of western Illinois, I would highly reccomend the procedure and especially Illinois Dyno Center. Tom Calvert and his son Jesse had the entire job done in just under an hour including changing the air filter for me and vacuuming the mouse nest under the dash where the ECU is. Apparently, the previous owner had some rodent problems as some of the insulation on the under side of the hood has been gnawed also. Once I get some numbers for the difference in economy I will post. Don (oldbug)

It is a known fact that VW/Audi speedometers are purposefully set to read a bit high. (you are traveling slower than the displayed reading)

There is a "tweak factor" that can be reprogrammed if you are adventurous.... but it is easy enough to just subtract 3 MPH from the displayed reading.

BTW: It is strongly suggested that you remove that "oiled guaze" airfilter and go back to the paper OEM unit. The OEM filter has been TESTED to filter better and the "oiled guaze" airfilter has been associated with MAF sensor failures.

I don't want to start "chewing" something that will take forever to digest but I am aware of the MAF problem. I was told that when servicing the filter, some people re-oil with too much oil thereby causing the MAF failure. Since my filter is good for 50-100,000 miles I don't intend to have that problem. I value your opinions as you seem to know quite a lot about quite a lot! Keep them coming please! A word about auto glass. On 7/21 I drove to a privat mechanic's house to have him belt my Beetle. The kit I had ordered from TDIPARTS arrived with the wrong belt thereby neccessitating a trip to the VW dealer to purchase the correct belt. We jumped in his '01 Beetle for the trip with him behind the wheel. Whithin five minutes we were accelerating down an on ramp and he lost control and rolled the Beetle 2x's. Long story but the short of it is, my door window was fully up and his was down by two inches. The roof on my side of the car was intact afterwards but his side was compressed to just above the head rest and the seat track was driven into the floor on his side. We both suffered from bumps and bruises but him more than me as you might imagine. A car's roll over strength is 70% dependant on the vehicles glass. Don't drive with a broken or cracked windshield! If anyone desires to see photos of the car after the crash, reply in this forum and I will post a link. Don

I bought my 1999 Beetle in October 2004 since then I have spent over 2,500.00 in repairs. Just recently my ac has went out. First it was making a shaking noise to me it sounded like a helicopter. It would only make this noise when I pushed the ac button. Yesterday it completely went out it is just blowing hot air in the car which is great with temps over 100 degrees. I have had a horrible experience with beetles I will never own another one. I am getting this problem fixed if financially possible and trading it off.
My check engine light stays on. A dealership quoted me that it would cost 100.00 to unplug it. I thought that was crazy to unhook something 100.00 dollars!

WOW - I am glad to hear that noone was seriously injured in the roolover.

I am curious - you mentioned that the "kit" from TDIparts had the "wrong" timing belt.... Are you aware that those kits PURPOSFULLY include the 100,000 mile TB? This is intended to allow you to "convert" your VW over to 100,000 mile TB changes.

What was the problem you encounterd with the TDIPARTS TB? Did you send eMail to TDIPARTS to get refund? (I have always found them very easy to work with)

The number on the timing belt for my Beetle is 038109119M but the kit they sent included a much smaller belt that began with the number 028... Peter at TDI parts was very good about it and sent me the correct belt in 2 days and also sent a prepaid mailing label for return of the wrong belt. I finally took the Beetle to a local dealer that used my parts from the kit to do the timing belt. I was still waiting for my injured mechanic to email me that he was feeling up to the task but I didn't want to wait much longer. The dealer replaced everything that came in the kit except for the valve cover seal as he said they didn't have to take off the valve cover. Fine with me, the job is done and should last several years now. BTW, my "03 is the 100,000 mile interval belt from the factory.

Cheers!

It is good to hear that it all worked out for you. (and hope your mechanic is OK too)

My 2003 Jetta is only at 77K miles.

I realize this is a NewBeetle forum but on a roadtrip from Vermont -to- Pittsburgh and back. It is measurably getting 58MPG on the highway. (which is over 800 miles per tankfull.)

I still wonder why most other folks are driving gassers. I could never again contend with under 40MPG from a passenger car. (Like my daughers 2001 NewBeetle)
