Here's what I've found out so far. According to both MNR and Radios & More, the CD changer can be controlled by ALL the available Impala radios (including UPO). However, MNR says that the harness that comes with the system won't work because it doesn't go all the way to the radio. He says that you have to purchase the harness that's listed on the web site and run the new wire from the trunk all the way up to the radio and attach the plug into "the open plug at the radio". He also said that if you have On-Star some additional modificaitons are needed. Aquaknot, I'm still very interested in hearing your story! Brad |

When I ordered my LS, I was advised that I could only get the wiring harness with the ULO option. And only with the base radio (cassette only). I was also advised that I had to get the CD-changer from the parts department after I took delivery. I procceded in this direction. Only ploblem was when I did take delivery 10-weeks later and went to the parts department, they told me that a CD-player for my 2000 Impala was not available. Then I worked many weeks with the parts department and after they ordered a couple of different models of changers they finally got the correct one that would work. Aftermarket changers won't work because the CD-changer has to be equipped with a lead from the changer to the radio that supplies "Class 2 Data". Only GM furnishes the correct changers as far as I know. I did try a couple of changers that Mobil-ONE tried but none would work. The CD-changer in my car is controlled from the radio itself---JUST AS THE OWNERS MANUAL SAYS. The steering wheel buttons control functions as indicated. Did I understand someone to say that the CD-wiring harness is equipped with the RDS radio that has a CD/cassette--if so, it may possibly work. But I am not aware of this combination. Its worth a try. But--if I were you I would go to the GM parts department and have them tell you which CD-changer you need to order. You also need to order a mounting brachet for the changer. It cannot be mounted under the package tray. I can give you my CD Part no. but you better check to see if it will match your RDS radio. MY CD part. no. is -25708970 and the part no. for a extra cartridge is 25659168. This is a 12-Disc unit. |

| I forgot to mention that I installed the changer myself after we layed it on the floor of the trunk and tried it out. Yes, the existing 7-lead connector plugs right into the rear of the changer-it couldn't be any easier. There was nothing else that had to be done to get it playing. IT worked. The only function that can't be done is to select the disc in reverse. The disc can only be selected in accending order. But, you can select tracs in any order!!! Forward or reverse. No problem for me-- I like it. | |

Thanks for the full story. Glad the changer works well for you. I don't have my Impala yet (I take delivery in May) so I can't refer to the manual yet Interesting that you just had to plug the unit in and it worked. According to the guy at MNR the harness doesn't work. Maybe he means that the factory harness doesn't work with the UPO radio (CD/Cassette). Even though I have two independent opinions that the UPO radio WILL control the changer, I'm still a little concerned. I'll continue my research and keep everyone posted. Brad |

| Can you inform me who MNR is?? Are you sure that the harness is factory installed with the UPO radio (CD/cassette)? If it is then it is very likely to work----BUT, again I am advised that you cannot get the CD-CHANGER wiring harness with the UPO option. I don't think that the factory would install the harness without terminating it at the radio. | |

MNR is MNR Electronics (www.mnrelectronics.com). I checked with them again today and he said he hasn't been lucky enough to have the factory harness work on any of the factory installed radios. He said all I can do is try the factory harness and if it doesn't work I can order the harness from him. It sounds like he's installed (or been involved with) a fair number of these. It appears that the harness is installed in ALL Impalas in Canada. It's not even an optional item, regardless of which radio you purchase. We have many different configuration options up here. Another example, in the U.S. you can't order the UPO radio without the "premium" speakers. In Canada we can (and I did). By the time I've got this thing all figured out I'll probably have driven myself (and a few others) nuts! Waiting until May to get my car isn't going to help! Brad |

Congrats, Aquaknot, on your upgrade. I got a couple of questions. How much did the dealer charge you for the changer? If you cannot mount the changer under the package shelf, where do you mount it? What was the part number for the bracket? Any chance for photos from you? =)
I have the radio/CD/tape option in my car and I was also told that the changer harness was not available with this package. But a few weeks ago I found a couple of connectors in the trunk and with a lot of help, discovered one of those was for the CD changer. So maybe the CD changer harness is not available as an option because it is included as standard equipment.

| I'm going along with your assumption regarding the plug in the trunk, it makes no sense for GM to install it and then not have it work with the head unit. Is it possible to contact GM directly and see if we can get an answer? I want to get that Delco 12 disc changer too since it appears it's the only one that will work in our car. Sounds like we are making some headway here though. | |
| I've been following this topic with interest because although I have a '96 Riviera, not an Impala, I've run into a brick wall trying to adapt a Delco (as in original GM) CD trunk mounted changer. The UPO cassette/CD is the only radio option for my car. I've been told by my GM dealer and the audio shop which does the warranty radio repairs for all the GM dealers within a 60Km radius that the factory changers can NOT be adapted to the UPO radio. I get "The radio doesn't have the internal controls for the changer if it's already controlling the built in CD player". The only suggestion I've had so far is to downgrade to a cassette only radio and then install the changer. Not an option. Anybody had any luck adapting one? I want to keep the car original and really don't want to pull the Sony 10 disc RF changer out of my Laser beater for it. Nowhere inconspicuous to mount the control head. | |
