I'm thinking about purchasing a 99 XJ8L with 70,000 miles on it. I took it for a test drive and noticed that sometimes the tranny would act like it was stuck in neutral then slam into gear when starting from a dead stop. The dealer had it checked and said that it was not a transmission problem because it was not throwing any codes out and said sometimes these things work themselves out or get worse. Any ideas? When I try to run the diagnostics through the on-board VCM, it flashes "PAO FAIL". Anyone with a clue as to what this means? Thanks, Alan

Replying to: sjb68 (Jun 23, 2009 4:13 pm) We have a 98 and it did something similar. We were stopped, placed in reverse and then going forward it seized up. Placed in reverse, nothing moved. Eventually, it 'released' if that is that correct word. Our mechanic came, drove it around and said it was fine to drive. Had no real idea except to say sometimes the anti-lock brakes seize up...on any car. Wasn't concerned. As we have a warranty, I want it to 'break' so that it can be fixed. No one except for me is concerned about being away from home in it!! Has shown no further indication that it is trying to do it again.

At approximately every 20 miles, bells, chimes go off five times in increments of five. The book states that this is a secondary warning for air bags when the light on the dash does reflecting same warning fails. Jag dealer doesn't know what I am talking about. Anyone have this problem? XJ8, I notice that the parking brake is no longer a hand brake...I love handbrakes ( my 88 Prelude & Legend had them)...when was the last year that the XJ8 had the hand brake???

Replying to: madonnadj (Jun 24, 2009 4:35 am) Had something similar on my 2004 xj8 it was very intermittent and was found to be a fault in the cancelation ring - this device transmits the electical power from the (fixed) car to the (rotating) steering wheel, and the wires tend to fail after much use. All fine now. hope this helps

I have a leak in my A/C system, dealer wanted to replace evaporator and compressor. Local Jag mechanic found no leak in compressor only on the evaporator. He added an A/C leak sealer called Red Angel with the hope to fix the leak. Has anyone used this product before? Are there an cautions to worry about? At start up each morning I get squealing from the front of my '01 XJ8 that lasts about 5 minutes. This also happens after the car has sat for a while, over 6 hours. I have been told that this happens because I have coolant leaking on to the drive belt. Would anybody recommend using a coolant stop leak additive? If so which one is better? Could there be another reason for the squealing?

Replying to: denham (Jun 29, 2009 5:49 am) Thanks for your response. So far the A/C has been working well, so well that the condensate is now coming in to the car. Mechanic has tried to blow out the drain tube thinking that it is blocked, but this did not work. Can anyone say why the water comes into the car and what else can be done? The driver's side and the rear left side gets very wet. I need A/C here in South Florida, especially in the summer months.
