| I often find myself wondering why the cougar wasn't more of a success, and it seems like the topic always comes up when I talk with other Cougar owners. Was it the lack of power compared to the competition? The fact that they never offered a 4 with an automatic? Just being a Mercury and bad marketing? Personally, I like my Cougar a lot, but it seems I am in the minority. | |

Yeah, it's a sore point. I feel that the car was poorly marketed, if at all. My Cougar was a fantastic bargain and is a quite competent car. It is true that it could be faster (one problem is that it looks too fast!) and there have been quality issues, but these are secondary to the fact that no one knew it existed. A possibly major problem is that the car is a real dog with an automatic transmission, even with the V6. This may well be why there was no automatic 4-cyl: it would have been horribly slow. |

There were a few 4cy automatics buile early on, but most went to Ford employees on a discount basis and to some car rental outfits. They quit building them because it was so slow that it couldn't get out of it's own way. Skip G. (Go way back in the archives for a little more discussion on this.) |

| Rental car companies got 4 cyl ATX Cougars? Maybe that was why the one I rented was such a stone (I didn't open the hood). Here I've been blaming it all on the ATX. | |
The V6ATX is noticeably slower than the MTX version. We've all agreed to that point. Skip G. |
| Well, I guess we all knew this was coming. What do you think it will do to the resale value? | |
| Ford released information stating that the Cougar is going to be built on the current platform until model year 2003, when it will take a hiatus to make way for the 2004 all new version utilising the Dew-Lite platform shared with the new Mustang. The Mustang will make its debut first, and the Cougar will follow approx. 6 months later. | |
| According to the Boston Globe (http://www.boston.com/cars/articles/2002/01/02_0111_ford_cuts_jobs_closes_plants.shtml), they will be ceasing production of the current Cougar which is what I meant. Therefore, our "New Edge" Cougar will have only been produced for 3 years, regardless of whether they bring back a car with the same name. | |
| Most of the factors, especially supply and demand, that lead to high resale values don't apply to this Cougar...yet. | |
IMHO, the Cougar will be pretty routine in it's resale value due to the lack of a high performance engine. If they had put in the 195-200HP piece from the Contour sport, it would be much more desirable to the kids in the future vs. Mustang and Camaro. LOTS of zip at much lower cost. To bad Skip G. |
