Got my new 2001 AS with auto, 6-CD changer and after-market remote-start/immobilize (dealer installed) on Feb.27. Zoom Zoom! My previous vehicle was a 1990 CChefCorsica, so perhaps you can imagine my enjoyment I'm having just going around corners! Of course it snowed 23 cecentimesust after I got it, which made me extremely nervous. Found no problems in ice/snow conditions. I've read with great interest all the previous posts, and I look forward to hearing from other Canadian owners. There seems to be model differences between Canada / USA, US to mention pricing differences. I bought the Protege after considering the VW GolfWVI can't get in the back seat and $6,000 CDN+), CANaru Impreza Sport Wagon ($$$$+), Civic and Focus. I didn't think of these really came close to the complete package I got with the Mazda. Is it just me or does this car seem bigger on the inside than how it looks on the outside? What a fun car to drive! NorCan

Congratulations. Can I assume that some program running in the background caused your keyboard to skip? Or was that part-French? Just kidding.

Looks like what we call 'franglais'. That's the last time I use the spellcheck. The edit function didn't work either.
Try again - Chev Corsica, 23 centimetres and ..not to mention...

Larry, I live about 10 minutes from Springfield. Is Lancaster Mazda on route 30? I drive up there about once a month, and maybe I'll check them out.
Thanks Chikoo! I called Pacifico Mazda today, and they will honor the S-Plan. At this time, they don't have any ES models in with the Premium package. I think the $750 rebate expires at the end of the month. Does anyone know if it will be extended?

Yes, you can get Protege via S-Plan pricing at Arlington Mazda. I got my 2001 ES from them about 4 weeks ago. I suggest you identify the car you want before you tell them you are entitled to S-Plan.
I dealt with a guy named Tim Folwaczny, and would recommend him. I believe he handles most of their buying service customers. Tim seems like a decent guy. I have had a long-running personal boycott of all Rosenthal dealerships, but made an exception for this purchase (they were the only dealer in town to have an auto ES with the options I wanted). I was relatively pleased with the experience -- no hassle on the S-Plan pricing, but I had to "firmly remind" them about the $750 rebate, which at first they tried to pretend didn;t apply to 2001's or might not apply for SPlan purchases. However, thry were very low key on the financing/extended warranty/rustproofing/LoJack pitches - no pushback when I said no thanks to all.
If you do go to see Tim, tell him Barry sent you!

Wow, you guys are all talking about tint now...
I just got tint on the ES today as a matter of fact! I got the Llumar tint 35% front 18% rear. I think it looks good and I'd post a picture for vocus but I don't have a dig camera. We're taking a trip next week and I can probably post a picture after that. I can't really tell much of a difference between the 35% and 18%. I really expected there to be a bigger difference between the two. I paid $147 for it which was the cheapest i could find (in the small town i live in) for tint with lifetime warranty.

Identify the car you want before you tell them you are entitled to S-Plan? That's funny (the dealer, not you). So you think they might "hide" the cars? Yes. Rosenthal does have a "well-deserved" reputation.
#750 of 24043 2001 Pro ES problems
Mar 07, 2001 (5:39 pm)
I just bought a 2001 pro ES with the premium package, A/T and tape deck added.I had it built to order,it took 6 weeks to get here. Picked it up on Friday, March the 3rd.I was very glad to see it arrive. I bought it for a fair price at 17,500 at 0% for 48 months. I have 235 miles on just before it died. I was doing 35 mph when this terrible racket came from the car. The car lost all power. I didn't realize you lose your brakes and have a heck of a time steering. I ended up using my emergency brake to stop the car and got it safely off to the side of the road. Needless to say I wasn't to happy with the situation and didn't know what had gone wrong. I tried starting it to no avail. I called Mazda and had it towed in. Mazda didn't have any idea what could of happened until they got under the hood. They put me in a rental. I got a call later tonight from the service manager. He said they got right on the car. He stated the car will need a new motor. He found where a bolt came loose or was over tighten and broke inside the engine. This piece of bolt proceeded to tear out a valve and do other damage. He said he had never seen anything like it. He is going to order a new engine for the car. He further stated the dealership wanted to make things right and the manager from sales will be calling me to see what it will take. He said you can get a brand new car, a different model or my money back. I will have to think on this for a day. I have had four Mazdas before this. I really like their product but this has made me really nervous. If the bolt was over tighten was it by hand or machine. If machine what is there to say the other ES's won't have the same problem. Has anyone else ever heard of or had this problem before. I need to make a decision soon. If anyone can help with any good advice it would be appreicated.

Brent, that is very bad karma. I would be in shock, if I was in your shoes. However, I think taking your time is a very good thing. Relax, it seems the dealer is giving you plenty of options. My 2 cents; I would go for the money back. I am a huge fan of Mazda, nonetheless this is very bad karma.
