You are in the Mazda Protege Forum.

What is this discussion about? Mazda Protege, Sedan

#18996 of 24043 The deal is done by boggse

This afternoon we sold our 2001 Protege ES (sniffle, sniffle) to CarMax for about what we owed. Then we headed over to Millennium Mazda (Durham, NC), and picked out an Automatic 2003 Silver Protege5 w/Side Airbags and ABS. We paid $2 under invoice with the S-Plan. We will pick it up Monday since we added the rear bumper guard and the fancy compass/thermometer mirror (at dealer cost), and they need to be installed.

Thanks for the info on the rocker panels (skirts does sound girly, although it is for my wife, so that's OK).

Disclaimer: This has NOTHING to do w/discs vs drums or ABS vs discs, so read on.

I've noticed in the last few days that it's taking me longer to stop the car and I have to press the pedal deeper and sooner than usual.

As you might remember I have just over 30.000 miles/48.000 kms on the PRO. I don't ride the brakes, just apply them when necessary.

I suspect they need to be replaced.

If that's the case, what brands do you recommend I take a look at? I hope the rotors are ok (should be - just 30.000 miles after all). I'm more interested in hearing about brake pads. Are there any special types? I know for rotors you can get regular or cross-drilled for example.

I'm really sorry, I don't know anything about brakes, but since I missed post #500 on the Posse board, I decided I deserved #19000 here.

And don't get alarmed, but I am going to ask if you have rear drums. If you do, have you tried Malt's reverse-whiplash maneuver?

check your brake fluid, it may need to be replaced.

Pedal feel is more related to brake fluid than brake pads, I think.

that's one of the things Mazda recommends when doing a 30,000 mile maintenance, replace brake fluid.

You can get decent brake pads at an auto parts store like auto zone and they will give you a lifetime warranty on them. They will give you a 2 year warranty on the rotors. Also, they are usually cheaper than buying from a dealer.

I second Hank: it sounds more likely like brake fluid than pad. But it could be also pad.

One technical question: Is drum design on the Protege allows the auto-adjustment when the pads slowly worn out?

Yep, check the fluid first. You could also have a leaky master cylinder. If ok, it may be warn pads. The rotors should be machined, or at least checked for scoring and runout or the new pads may not contact well. Get good quality pads [you could try NAPA, Mazda, or some reputable parts place.]
If someone else will do the work, I'd stay away from Sears.

The shoes in the rear drums auto-adjust when you drive in reverse gear.
