08 Santa Fe GLS by bcohn21

I needed to dump my 05 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It had 91,500 miles on it, a big dent in the front, needed a rear brake job, had a rebuilt tranny and the extended warranty had expired. I knew I was going to put in between 4 and 5k worth the work within the next year.

3 weeks ago we went to a Hyundai dealer here in CT to look at the 08 Santa Fe's since there were good rebates from Hyundai and the interest rates were real low to finance. Mind you I had called about 5 dealerships to get pricing on the Santa Fe before we went to the dealership near our home. One dealership quoted me $20,345 for a basic AWD. They were far away in distance. I used that price as the bargaining chip when I went to the dealer.

So my wife and I were walking the lot and were approached by a salesman. It was the same salesperson that we dealt with when we were there 14 months earlier (I didn't buy then). He said he could do $1 dollar below invoice. I cut to the chase and said point blank that he would need to beat $20,345 for an AWD 08 Santa Fe and I don't want to take a bath in trade for my car (Even though I knew I was going to take some sort of a loss). He laughed at first. When we were walking away he yelled "we can go talk to the sales manager". So we did. The sales manager went through his inventory log and said he had a few Santa Fe's and could do around $22,000 for one that had an upgraded package. This price included a rebate. So we sat down at the salespersons desk and he went through the shpeal. He said he wanted to make a copy of the registration of my trade. I said that we were going to leave and grab lunch and that we would talk it over. He then said when we got back all we would have to do is sign and the car was ours. I FELT DIRTY. Like I was being sleized by car salesman.

So after lunch I called the salesperson back and said thanks for your help but we're going to check out the dealership that offered $20,345. The salesperson put me on hold and the sales manager picked up. I told him I thought I was being sleized and I was going to the other dealership. I also said I was not "WOWED". That seemed to work. All of a sudden there was a little bit more money in rebates, a mysterious low financing rate with Bank of America, which allowed them to give us more $$ off. We ended up purchased the vehicle for about $21,000 plus a few services. I think the final price might have been $20,700. My wife is the numbers person and knew once we cut through the B.S. we got a decent deal. I think she said we needed to sign and escape quietly. I always feel that you never win with a car dealership . I did lose on the Jeep but not that much. I love the Santa Fe and recommend it.

I forgot to mention the MSRP was $25,515. The final price I mentioned was not out the door. That was around another $2k.

I'm a little confused by those number's. Did you pay $22,000 for 08 Santa Fe with a MSRP of $25,515? I hope that's not the case because that would be a good deal for the dealer.

No we paid about $20,500. How much should I have paid? It's an AWD with an upgraded package.

Just a little curious about 2 items in your post. You say you confirmed that the dealer lost $700 on your sale but you don't feel bad because they make it up on volume. Doesn't that mean the more they sell the more they lose? Also you say the salesman gets paid the same no matter what price the car is sold for. I personally have never encountered a car dealership that is not commission incentivised. Still, sounds like you got a great deal. Just my 2 cents.

Allow me to chime in...we got a SF Limited for a STEAL...the dealer lost over $1,000 on the sale of THAT car, but as the manager explaiend to me, it was the last day of the month and I was the last customer, and if I bought the car, the the dealer would meet the next level of sales volume in their agreement with Hyundai, which kicks in an incentive for each car the dealer sold that month. I knew this going in, and I called every dealer in the NW to find one that would match my very low-ball price. I had to drive three hrs, but it was worth it, and the dealer by my house could not even come close.

I don't think the dealer made anything on me. We were going to hold out until the last day of December, however, my tranny on my Jeep was slipping so I needed to dump it. It was a 05 Grand Cherokee with 91,300 miles. That's a lot of miles for an 05. The funny thing is I thought the dealer was going to send it to the auction. They never did. It is sitting on their used lot for sale. It has a nice dent in the front. They never did the body work so they are selling an SUV with a dent, a rebuilt tranny that is about to go, and it also needs a rear brake job. They are selling it for $10,900. At the end of the day they will find some sucker who will buy it.

I knew going in I was going to take a loss but it was not a huge one. The MSRP of my vehicle was $25,500. Invoice was probably around $24,700 and with rebates and a little haggling we paid $20,700. The dealer broke even.

You got a decent deal. I've seen FWD Santa Fe's advertised for 18,000 here in CT. That is not out the door.

Since our purchase, we have become 'friends' with our salesman, strange, I know. But my husband and him have a lot of similar interests and he's not sleazy. So... we've learned more about how the dealership works from him (not as customers, but friends). His girlfriend had bought the same car earlier that year and we paid less than her (he was impressed by my skills ). By volume, I mean that people like me even out with deals where they make mad money, and they are able to move a car that has been sitting. One thing that helped my negotiation was that I was willing to take the car on the lot, saving them time and money finding the 'exact' color/model. I would have never chosen black, but color is not worth $$ for me. My other "minimums" were exceeded in the model.. I didn't even know it had bluetooth until I drove to San Francisco Last week! There are many other upgrades, but because I only talked about my minimums and didn't want to know about all that added-on stuff, it was the only car that met my minimums, so they couldn't play the added-value game with me. But there was a lot more stuff than I listed in the previous post I didn't even know about, so cool for me!
