All of the car companies are very tight-lipped about future rebate plans. There's absolutely no way to know what will be offered beginning May 1st until May 1st gets here. If you don't feel comfortable making a deal until after April 30th, the best thing you can do is wait and hope that the rebate then is at least as much as it is now.

Should I be willing to pay a little more if the car is hard to find? by jswain

I am looking for a 2008 SE FWD w/ Touring, roof rack rails and carpeted floor mats in Powder White Pearl or Platinum Sage. I have spoken to several dealers in my area, and there is no car with the options in my state, and only a couple in even remotely close states. A sales guy has found one for me in an adjoining state, but will have to add the roof rails for me. His offer was $100 over invoice, plus $250 for the rails and installation, $399 doc. fee and $100 for the cost of bringing the vehicle to my state. I am negotiating down from this, but feel like I have a little less leeway since there are so few cars with the options I want in my area. The total cost ends up being about $450 more than Edmunds TMV cost. How far should I push here?

Deals for $1000 UNDER invoice (less rebates) are commomplace on 2008 Santa Fes. In your shoes, I'd start at that number (plus the rails and the $100 for getting it from the other dealer); even if you pay $500 under invoice, it'd be a deal worth taking. As for their $399 documents fee, it's nothing but pure profit for the dealer. If they want to insist on charging it, tell them to reduce the purchase price by the same amount. You should be able to buy it for $500 - $1000 UNDER invoice, LESS rebates, PLUS rails, PLUS $100 transport charge.

BTW, regarding the $100 transport charge, how will the car be transported? If they intend to pay someone to drive it from the originating dealer, you might want to think about just picking it up yourself. No way would I allow a complete stranger to drive my new car any significant distance.

I see that others are getting those types of deals, but I can't seem to get that here for this car. The dealer is telling me that they have to pay the other dealership invoice for the car and said something about not getting hold back since the car is not on their lot (?). So, his offer is $25,445 (invoice - although Edmunds says invoice would be $102 lower than this) + $100 (his profit) + roof rails (he is going to price tomorrow, but says probably $200 - $250 installed) + $100 (cost of transporting the car) + $399 (doc fee) - $3,000 (my trade in - which he is taking sight unseen) + $757.06 (taxes) +16.50 (title application) - $2,000 (rebate). The result is $22,067 out the door, after trade and rebate and including taxes, etc.

I told him I would take the deal if he would take $200 off it, and he basically said no (even though he knows I am traveling tomorrow and he really wants to close this by the end of the month). He said he would go to $20,000 even, and would give me extra for the trade if necessary, but that was it.

I am leaning towards taking it since I really want this car, with the options I want and the color I want, and there are very few like that. There are only a few in the Southeast region (confirmed by other dealers). The price is doable for me, but I just don't want to feel like I am getting jobbed!

If you're within a couple of hundred dollars, I'd say you're doing the right thing by going for it. The only other thing you could try is having your selling dealer try to negotiate a better price from the dealer that actually has the car since that dealer will get the holdback and volume incentive money from Hyundai. (As the deal stands, the dealer that has the car is likely making some sweet money on this deal.) Otherwise, you're probably getting the best deal possible under the circumstances.

2008 Santa Fe build quality by joemama33

I test drove a new 08 Santa Fe SE and was very disappointed. There is a real problem with the transmission. The lag between first and second in very apparent. While crusing the transmiision would shift up and down with a jerk.

For this price ($25k), a CRV or Vue would be a much better buy, IMO.

I've had absolutely no problems with the transmission in my 2007 Limited AWD. From what you described, it sounds like your test vehicle was malfunctioning.

On the reviews I have been reading, I have noticed that some of folks are commenting on the transmission in the 2008, which worries me because I am looking to buy a 2007 or 2008 with touring.

The 2007's have rave reviews everywhere.

It's getting harder and harder to find 2007 with Touring without it being a Limited, which is out of my price range. I hope they fix that soon.
