Ok, bought the Santa Fe SE with the following info.. My offer of 18000 out the door was ridiculous and I know it! Went to another dealer in Greensboro.

Invoice was about 23,300 with mats and cargo cover

23,300 - 2000 rebate - 1500 trade = 20,300

We agreed on 19,200 + Tax, tag, etc. So, looks like I got it for $1100 under invoice, which makes me happy.

Beautiful vehicle, easy to drive, most importantly, surprised the wife. She was on her way home in her beat-up 98 cavalier and I called her and told her to swing by the dealership. She was very happy!

Thanks for the help, really appreciate the info I got from here.

Just curious; Is your SE FWD or AWD?

Nice job, trumpetpa! You got a very sweet deal. I hope you enjoy your Santa Fe as much as I do mine.

I am thinking to buy this car also.
I am in NJ. do you know if this $2000 rebate is available in NJ?
if invoice price is 25000, at which point I can start to negotiate? $1000 lower than the invoice? or $2000 lower than the invoice?

I read some posters here and find the following equation, anybody know if it works?
invoice price-$1000-$2000 rebate= OTD price (including everything)

thanks a lot.

Not sure your equation is accurate. OTD would include taxes, tags, etc. which varies by state and/or county. I spent $12 and purchased the Consumer Reports new car buying guide for the Santa Fe. It gives the invoice and includes all available rebates & holdbacks. I started my negotiations nearly $2000 below invoice. The best $12 I ever spent.

dm126,

CR states in its advertisement of their March 2008 monthly issue and car buying guide that the consumer should start below the " factory invoice" not the "MSRP" and/or "dealer's invoice" to date no one on this blog has written differently and seems to be avoiding the CR statement as prices are posted here.

What was the cost of the invoice price CR gave you?

Actually, that's NOT what CR says. The actual ad says "Naturally, most people think it is wise to negotiate down from the MSRP to as close to the Dealer Invoice Price as you can get. And that's exactly what the dealer wants you to think - but it won't get you the best deal. The reason: Both the MSRP and the Dealer Invoice price are 'artificial' numbers created by the car manufacturer and dealer to serve their negotiating purposes.....If you know the real price, you'll have true negotiating power because you'll know how much 'wiggle' room you really have. YOU SHOULD BARGAIN UP FROM THIS REAL PRICE.

No one is going to buy a new car for BELOW true factory cost unless there are dealer incentives on a slow moving model. Somewhere below "dealer invoice" is more likely.

As long as you want to be precise... the only words in the hightlighted orange colored box in the main text of the March issue of the CR ad as stated below are with a period, not three periods at the end of this alert to the reader.

Both the MSRP and the Dealer Invoice Price are "artificial" numbers created by the car manufacturer and dealer to serve their negotiating purposes.
