Here are my opinions from my car buying experience- 1) Pacifico Hyundai (Philadelphia, PA) - This is the place where I bought the car from, so needless to say, I was pretty happy with the way they treated me. We finalized on the price before I entered the showroom and no undue pressure was put on me to make a deal. Initially, I was not happy with the test drive since I could hear some dull sound at the back; but they fixed it by replacing the rear tires and I did not hear the sound at the time of the second test drive. Overall, everything went smoothly. 2) Freysinger Hyundai (Mechanicsburg, PA) - The salesman was extremely helpful and he took out a lot of time to talk with me and answer my queries. He was vry patient with me and did not try to push me to buy. I would have bought the car from him if he had my desired configuration in stock. 3) Harrisburg Hyundai (Harrisburg, PA) - These guys were classic bait-and-switchers. They tell you on the phone that they have the desired configuration in stock but when you get there, it has suddenly been sold in the past few minutes but you can buy something else. Please don't play games like this! 4) Jack Giambalvo Hundai (York, PA) - The salesman was pretty straightforward with me on the phone and told me what he had and didn't have. He had the desired configuration in stock but it was a service loaner. I told him that I wasn't interested and that was the end of the story. 5) Lancaster County Motors (East Petersburg, PA) - The internet salesperson was a pretty sweet lady who megotiated with me on the phone but was straightforward enough to tell me that there was a number she could not go below. It was a pleasant experience dealing with them but they couldn't match the price I was looking for. 6) Savage Auto Group (Reading, PA) - There's one thing about being unwilling to negotiate, but its another thing when you're being downright rude to the customer. The salesperson herself was fine, but when I asked them how long a service loaner had been on the lot, her boss told me - 4 years! I guess it was his way of telling me F*** off 7) Sussman Auto (Willow Grove, PA) - They were pretty civil to deal with but they didn't have my desired configuration in stock. They definitely need to update their databases though; even though I had informed them 3 times that I have bought the car and they should take me off their list, they continued to send me email reminders. 8) Fitzgerald Auto Mall (Gaithesburg, MD) - These guys were great to deal with; no games and everything out in the open. If I had lesser time on my hands and had no interest in negotiating with different people, I would have definitely bought from them. The only funny thing was that dealers in PA were offering me a $2000 rebate but MD dealers were able to offer only $1000. 9) Thompson Automotive (Baltimore, MD) - Again, no wastage of time and an overall great experience. Their price was the lowest of all at $25,603 (That is with only $1000 rebate) and I could see myself buying through them had I not thrown in the towel for around $150 more! 10) Ettleston Hyundai (Countryside, IL) - These guys were pretty clear about the fact that they did not have my configuration in stock. As with other dealers in a similar position, they offered to get the exact configuration from a different dealer, but I know that then their capacity to negotiate is limited. 11) Loren Hyundai (Glenview, IL) - These guys never returned my emails! 12) McGrath City Hyundai (Chicago, IL) - They were pretty aggressive but never in a negative way. They made it clear that they wanted my business and would be willing to negotiate on price to do so. In the end, they didn't have my required configuration in stock. 13) Antwerpen Hyundai (Baltimore, MD) - Never bothered to return my emails. 14) Bob Bell Hyundai (Glen Burnie, MD) - After a number of email exchanges, I finally got the message from them that they did not have my desired configuration in stock. Wasted quite some time going back and forth. 15) Porter Auto Group (Newark, DE) - Were unwilling to go down on price 16) Napleton Hyundai (Chicago, IL) - The salesman was pretty nice about spending a lot of time with me and answering my questions. They did not, however, have my config. in stock. 17) Castle Hyundai (Newcastle DE) - Did not have the config. in stock and tried to sell me others that they did have in stock. Wasn't unpleasant dealing with them though. 18) Ohare Hyundai (Des Plaines, IL) - Were unwilling to go down on price 19) Howard Auto Group (Elmhurst, IL) - Did not have my config. in stock. 20) Global Auto Mall (North Plainfield, NJ) - Did not have config. in stock and called me repeatedly to try to get me in for a testdrive. 21) Turnersville Auto Mall (Turnersville, NJ) - Never got back to me on my earlier enquiry. 22) Gurnee Hyundai (Gurnee, IL) - Did not have my desired config. in stock and tried to get me in for something else, but was quite polite about it.

| Just finished helping my wife's best friend purchase silver SF SE in WPB,Fl. She was very skeptical about Hyundai and the Sante Fe, but once she drove it -she realized what a great vehicle the SF is and how much it offered for the dollar. I checked FitaMall price in Clearwater,Fl. and used it at WPB dealer. List on the vehicle was $24,725 and dealer bogus add-ons of $2495.00 for pinstripes, etc. which went out the window, Total price was $22866.00 out the door including tax. | |

Hey everyone. I live in the Bergen County area in New Jersey. I went to a couple of dealerships and the lowest they are offering me is $24,900 out the door which includes the tax, registration fees, etc. This is for a basic 07 Santa Fe SE AWD model. I'm wondering if this is a good price or I can get possibly a lower price? |

Replying to: swy81 (Nov 05, 2007 2:04 pm) #1264 of 1670 OK....I may have gotten the best deal to date! by oregonmastiff Aug 06, 2007 (2:37 pm) Bookmark | Reply First, I want to thank all previous posters, as I learned a ton, and that knowledge gave me tremendous bargaining power. so, again, thank you to all who have posted before. Here is what I got and how I did it: I just bought a 2007 Limited AWD with Touring Package (7-seat), XM, etc. No sunroof. more on sunroof below. Dealer Invoice was $28,540 (this includes $670 freight). I bought the car for $24,900 + free cargo and all-weather floor mats. This price does not include title and registration, which was another $218. What I know for fact that can help you: -Northwest dealers seem to have a promotion of $500 cash back to the dealer from Hyundai. This is not the Big Duh or any other public rebate. -Buy at th end of the month!!!! Dealers are trying to make quota. My delaer needed to more cars and his volume incentive from Hyundai would go from $400 a car to $600 a car for the month. -Dealers get a "hold back" for roughly 3% from the factory , or for a Limited, roughly $900. When financing, the dealer gets "finance reserve", about $282. -Don't forget Big Duh $500 and the normal $1000 rebate to boot. -Dealers in the BIG CITY easily meet volume. Rural dealers will never make volume, and hence not be able to pass on the savings. Find the dealer just outside of the city who is close to making the next "stair step" in volume. and you will find one with patience. _ call the dealer and ask to speak with the GM. No one else!! Tell GM $3,600 under his invoice. Most will say get lost, but you will find one after a lot of call. Don't even waste your time walking in to the dealer or talking to the sales guys. Tell the GM this is the deal you can do and can it work for him/her. Be nice about it and hopefully you will strike gold. -Sunroof. On the model I have, I do not have the premium package. Had I gotten that, it would have only added the sunroof. The sunroof can be prurchased aftermarket. Aftermarket sunroofs can be better (or worse) depending on who does it. Better, meaning size and position of glass options that are not from Hyundai. and you may get it less that the stock sunroof. -Negotiate goodies, like all-weather mats, oil changes, yearly detailing, savings on tires from local vendors, etc. WORK IT! -and, if they don't have your color car, don't let them tell you it will cost more. Yes, thety don't make as much, but stick to your guns--and be polite.- -be careful what you sign in the closing!! -and again, deal with the GM!!! And, be professional and nice!!! Financing: I follwed the directions of getting a zero percent credit card that was posted on this site. I got from wells fargo a zero percent for one year, no balance transfer fee. Wells fargo gave me $35,000 into my checking acct and I put that money in a money market. I paid cash for the car. make sure you PAY ATTENTION TO TH DETAILS ON THE ZERO % CARD!!!!! As an aside, I love the car!! which we had a little better MPG, but the luxury drive feeling, stability, sound (or lack of noise), makes this car a great value. I just can not help feeling like I should get a snobby license plate that read "BST VALU". Lastly, I was torn between the outback and the sante fe. see my post on the comparison. obviously, you know what I choose.

Replying to: oregonmastiff (Nov 05, 2007 2:15 pm) Hmmm. I'll have to try speaking to the GM. Thanks for the info. Another question. I guess, what should I be looking to pay out the door including taxes, fees, and registration? I'm looking for a base SE AWD. Nothing more, nothing less. From what you got, I can see that the $24,900 the dealers are quoting me for out the door, is too much. What is a fair price I should be paying. Sorry, one last question. That $3600 off of the invoice I should be asking for. I'm assuming that's the price after taxes but not including fees. Or is that before taxes and fees? |

I got another general question. What is generally the rule of thumb when getting a good deal? What's a good calculation method? Paying $500-1000 under invoice out the door which should include taxes, registration fees, etc? Or does this value include after financing as well?

Replying to: swy81 (Nov 05, 2007 3:48 pm) As I've posted here dozens of times before, negotiate your purchase price first. These days, you should be able to buy a 2007 Santa Fe for $1000 - $1500 under invoice with no problem. These numbers are BEFORE factoring in rebates, taxes, and registration fees. So, if a particular car has an M.S.R.P. of $29,975 and an invoice of $28,134, you should be able to buy it for somewhere between $26,634 and $27,134. ADD to that tax and registration. From that total SUBTRACT all rebates that you qualify for. (Rebates, taxes, and registration vary considerably from state-to-state. That's why it doesn't make sense to try to analyze whether a deal is good or bad if the only number we can see is the bottom line which takes them all into account. The only consistent basis for comparison is the initial purchase price, before factoring in those other variables.) One other thing - many dealers try to add things like "dealer fees", processing fees", etc. My advice is to simply tell them that you won't pay them. All they are is extra profit that they try to tack on after the deal is made. As for the so-called "advertising fees", these may be tougher to avoid. In most cases, the dealer actually does pay this money into an advertising co-op. Since you're negotiating from invoice (and not M.S.R.P.), the number is usually added to the invoice (which explains why the invoice shown by the dealer is sometimes higher than what's shown here ar Edmunds.com). Fitzmall, for example, pays $150/vehicle for advertising fees. If you compare their invoice pricing with Edmunds', you'll see a $150 difference every time. If you're negotiating a deal based on $XXX under invoice, it's reasonable to include the ad fees in the purchase price.
