No apology necessary, Jeff! All's cool. BTW, what part of the country are you in? I ask because there's a Lithia Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep dealership directly across the street from our local Hyundai dealership (Santa Rosa, CA). I was very close to buying a Grand Cherokee Limited from them before ultimately going with my Santa Fe. They seemed pretty cool when I was talking to them. Of course with Lithia being the HUGE organization that they are, there's bound to be good and bad dealerships within their company.

I am in Reno Nevada. There is a huge Hyundai dealer in Roseville Calif (huge for this area anyway) about 1 hr away. There is also a dealer in Carson City ...about 45 minutes away (very small).
 
Our dealer is stand alone (Lithia bought most of the city's car dealerships thru the years and there are not many independents left. Of course they will never get their mitts on Toyota or Honda or the likes! I would not want to be in the car business now!
 
It is very hard to get a good price on anything unless you are prepared to really travel. Amazingly the service dept here is very good....ONCE THEY KNOW WHAT TO DO WHEN HYUNDAIUSA DECIDES TO TELL THEM!!!!
 
They also had no idea about the plug and trailer harness. BUT when they looked it up, they added the lithia markup which would have made it come to about $97 + tax, instead of the $81.61 list price!if I remember correctly.
 
 I ordered the harness by phone, from Roseville (since it has become a matter of principal...not getting ripped off by local stealerships. Lots of paperwork and dealing with CA and Nevada DMV....
 
For some reason (maybe to get my next car purchase )they felt the need to make it right, so they adjusted the price so that the unit, Freight, and tax included came out to $82! If I stay with Hyundai, Roseville gets the business just for going the extra mile!

I have a GLS fully loaded, AWD, Premium pkg. and Touring pkg., I don`t believe the Ultimate pkg. is available for this model. I purchased it the last of April and paid $24,400, I`m sure now with the closing out of the 2007 model you could get one for a lot less.

First of all, thank you to everybody for sharing their experiences with me; they have been most useful in the whole car buying experience. I finally bought my car in mid-October for $25,750.(not including tax and title). This came to be around $5200 below MSRP since the MSRP on this configuration was $30,980.
 
I started looking for a 2007 Santa Fe SE AWD with Touring and Ultimate around mid-September 2007 and finally ended up buying a Limited AWD with Touring and Premium. Why this specific configuration, you may ask...well, we definitely think AWD is a must considering the snow we have to drive through every winter in Chicago. We really liked the flexible configuration that the Touring package gave us, and my wife really wanted the sunroof that came with the Premium package. In the end, I went for the leather and chose to give up the DVD player since the economics of it wasn't working out. I could not justify paying the dealer around $2000 for the DVD player with wireless microphones when I could get the same thing installed at Best Buy for $600. Considering that we have two young kids, we went in for the leather since it would be easier to clean.
 
So here's the way I calculated my numbers-

Touring+Premium Package $2,068.00

Vehicle Price $28,399.00
Inland Freight and Handling $670.00
Total $29,069.00

Final Cost $25,659.70
Sales Tax $1,539.58
Tags and Title $150.00
Out the Door $27,349.28
 
I started negotiating with dealers with the price of $25,659.70. My living situation was a little unique in that I am living in Harrisburg, PA temporarily since I am on a project here, but I have my permanent residence in Chicago,IL. So I was talking to dealers in IL, PA, MD, DE and NJ. I finally bought my car for $25,750 from Pacifico Hyundai in Philadelphia, PA. I also got an offer from Thompson Hyundai in MD for $25,603, but by that time I didn't want to hunt any further and didn't want to invest any more time into this exercise.
All in all, I am super excited about my purchase and am happy I decided to go in for the Santa Fe!
I am going to write about some of the good and bad dealers in a separate post.

Here are my opinions from my car buying experience-
1) Pacifico Hyundai (Philadelphia, PA) - This is the place where I bought the car from, so needless to say, I was pretty happy with the way they treated me. We finalized on the price before I entered the showroom and no undue pressure was put on me to make a deal. Initially, I was not happy with the test drive since I could hear some dull sound at the back; but they fixed it by replacing the rear tires and I did not hear the sound at the time of the second test drive. Overall, everything went smoothly.
 
2) Freysinger Hyundai (Mechanicsburg, PA) - The salesman was extremely helpful and he took out a lot of time to talk with me and answer my queries. He was vry patient with me and did not try to push me to buy. I would have bought the car from him if he had my desired configuration in stock.
 
3) Harrisburg Hyundai (Harrisburg, PA) - These guys were classic bait-and-switchers. They tell you on the phone that they have the desired configuration in stock but when you get there, it has suddenly been sold in the past few minutes but you can buy something else. Please don't play games like this!
 
4) Jack Giambalvo Hundai (York, PA) - The salesman was pretty straightforward with me on the phone and told me what he had and didn't have. He had the desired configuration in stock but it was a service loaner. I told him that I wasn't interested and that was the end of the story.
 
5) Lancaster County Motors (East Petersburg, PA) - The internet salesperson was a pretty sweet lady who megotiated with me on the phone but was straightforward enough to tell me that there was a number she could not go below. It was a pleasant experience dealing with them but they couldn't match the price I was looking for.
 
6) Savage Auto Group (Reading, PA) - There's one thing about being unwilling to negotiate, but its another thing when you're being downright rude to the customer. The salesperson herself was fine, but when I asked them how long a service loaner had been on the lot, her boss told me - 4 years! I guess it was his way of telling me F*** off
 
7) Sussman Auto (Willow Grove, PA) - They were pretty civil to deal with but they didn't have my desired configuration in stock. They definitely need to update their databases though; even though I had informed them 3 times that I have bought the car and they should take me off their list, they continued to send me email reminders.
 
8) Fitzgerald Auto Mall (Gaithesburg, MD) - These guys were great to deal with; no games and everything out in the open. If I had lesser time on my hands and had no interest in negotiating with different people, I would have definitely bought from them. The only funny thing was that dealers in PA were offering me a $2000 rebate but MD dealers were able to offer only $1000.
 
9) Thompson Automotive (Baltimore, MD) - Again, no wastage of time and an overall great experience. Their price was the lowest of all at $25,603 (That is with only $1000 rebate) and I could see myself buying through them had I not thrown in the towel for around $150 more!
 
10) Ettleston Hyundai (Countryside, IL) - These guys were pretty clear about the fact that they did not have my configuration in stock. As with other dealers in a similar position, they offered to get the exact configuration from a different dealer, but I know that then their capacity to negotiate is limited.
 
11) Loren Hyundai (Glenview, IL) - These guys never returned my emails!
 
12) McGrath City Hyundai (Chicago, IL) - They were pretty aggressive but never in a negative way. They made it clear that they wanted my business and would be willing to negotiate on price to do so. In the end, they didn't have my required configuration in stock.
 
13) Antwerpen Hyundai (Baltimore, MD) - Never bothered to return my emails.
 
14) Bob Bell Hyundai (Glen Burnie, MD) - After a number of email exchanges, I finally got the message from them that they did not have my desired configuration in stock. Wasted quite some time going back and forth.
 
15) Porter Auto Group (Newark, DE) - Were unwilling to go down on price
 
16) Napleton Hyundai (Chicago, IL) - The salesman was pretty nice about spending a lot of time with me and answering my questions. They did not, however, have my config. in stock.
 
17) Castle Hyundai (Newcastle DE) - Did not have the config. in stock and tried to sell me others that they did have in stock. Wasn't unpleasant dealing with them though.
 
18) Ohare Hyundai (Des Plaines, IL) - Were unwilling to go down on price
 
19) Howard Auto Group (Elmhurst, IL) - Did not have my config. in stock.
 
20) Global Auto Mall (North Plainfield, NJ) - Did not have config. in stock and called me repeatedly to try to get me in for a testdrive.
 
21) Turnersville Auto Mall (Turnersville, NJ) - Never got back to me on my earlier enquiry.
 
22) Gurnee Hyundai (Gurnee, IL) - Did not have my desired config. in stock and tried to get me in for something else, but was quite polite about it.

Congratulations on your purchase and thanks for posting your buying experiences. I'm curious about the dealers that didn't have your configuration in stock, did any of them offer to check for your choice thru the dealer network inventory?

Just finished helping my wife's best friend purchase silver SF SE in WPB,Fl. She was very skeptical about Hyundai and the Sante Fe, but once she drove it -she realized what a great vehicle the SF is and how much it offered for the dollar. I checked FitaMall price in Clearwater,Fl. and used it at WPB dealer. List on the vehicle was $24,725 and dealer bogus add-ons of $2495.00 for pinstripes,etc. which went out the window, Total price was $22866.00 out the door including tax.

Hey everyone. I live in the Bergen County area in New Jersey. I went to a couple of dealerships and the lowest they are offering me is $24,900 out the door which includes the tax, registration fees, etc. This is for a basic 07 Santa Fe SE AWD model.
 
I'm wondering if this is a good price or I can get possibly a lower price?
