Yup, the unit is sitting at the shop, between the glass and the motor (which is mounted high) we saved probably 75-100lbs.

It's former owner would be crying if he saw it now, a beautiful mint rare car destroyed IMHO.

It's not destroyed, the car had come to the end of it's usefulness as a street car with over 150k on it, the AC wasn't working, and some other issues like a leaky roof etc made it not able to perform it's day to day duties as a daily driver. So rather than sell it for like $1500 why not bring it to the greatness of standing proudly on the podium showing what a "lesser" car can do?
The great part is that when the windows are up, since they are tinted, the car looks nearly stock from the outside. So people dismiss it until it goes out in the RACE group rather than the HPDE group!
The former owner is actually on this board! Heck if we get good enough, and travel down to TX, he may even take it out on the track!

I don't think they were rare, not really. It's not like they're a collectible.
I'd cringe if it were an SVX, maybe.
That Legacy has lived its useful life on the streets, and is now getting a 2nd life on the track. That's the way I see it.

Actually it's rarer than the SVX. There are only about 2000 or so 5MT Sport Sedans made v. many more SVXs.

juice, I am surprised that a diehard car enthusiest such as you would consider that a car has to be a collectible before it would be worth preserving. To me any rare car would be worth preserving. Like Paisan says the Legacy Turbo 5MT was rare to begin with, and Paisan has one of the rarest of all, an origional rustfree example.

However in that vain, the turbo legacy was built specifically for racing, this was the first 555 Rally car that Subaru campaigned and essentially brought them to where they are today with WRC, so having it live on as a race car, is not a bad thing IMO. We are trying to keep it as stock-looking as possible and even the drivetrain is 99% stock on it.

I guess I didn't realize it was so rare.
It was underappreciated even when it was new. I guess it will remain a footnote in history that few even know about.
It wouldn't have stayed rust-free for long, given all the salt they pour on the roads in the NE.

This is true about the salt. Lucky for it, now it will never see snow or ice or salt, unless we start to rally it
I think it will give it an extended life since it will only be used for racing now and should last a bit longer only doing light duty. I am also keeping it registered so that we can take it to meets and what not.

yes, sadly, there is no sense keeping it now the Camry is here. I picked up a set of goldies for a god price; the SSR Comps are too valuable to include with the car. So here is she is in "For Sale" livery. She's been a good car, and I'm going to miss her.
