We took possession of a brand new 2006 X-Type 3.0 in October 2005 (first 2006's in the US, loaded, nav sys, etc.). Right away we had to take it back to have a crinkled window trim part changed under warranty, check the excessive wind noise and have them check a ticking noise like valves in the engine (ticks continuously whether hot or cold). We were told that it was the valves most likely, and, that JaguarUSA's policy is to only exchange, not repair, brand new defective engines with re manufactured USED engines. The Jag dealer attached the new chrome strip to the window and it promptly fell off 2 days later, and couldn't do anything about the loud wind noise. Sixty days later they had to replace the microphone unit in the Bluetooth system, and just yesterday (6/13), the air conditioning system stopped working for about 2 hours on I-75 and then began working again. All this and the car has less than 3800 miles on it. We believe that the Jaguar X-Type reliability hype is false, and that their policy of replacing a brand new engine with a used one is completely wrong. We strongly advise anyone thinking of buying a new or used Jaguar to think again. Vince and Pat |

Replying to: desertguy (Jun 14, 2006 1:49 pm) We had high hopes reading comments like yours before we bought the car. I don't know why ours is trouble prone but it is. We wrote to the Jag customer relations people and were told that they will replace a new engine with a used remanufactured one. The other problems have happened so they aren't made up. Hope you continue troublefree with yours, but ours has problems and we can't recommend it to anyone. Vince

| My 2002 X-Type 3.0 Sport with 49,000 miles on it has been a great car. I bought it last year from a dealer and it has the certified 100k warranty on it. Tonight the battery light on the dashboard came on and wont go off. The headlights are as bright as ever so I dont think its the alternator. Anyone have any other ideas what it might be? The manual says 'generator fault' and I'll bring it to the dealer I'm just wondering what it might be. Thanks. | |

They said that the engine is a derivative of the Ford Duratec, with the original castings used but the rest was jag. While the Duratec had hydraulic lifters (and the local Jag tech also thought so initially), the Jag version has shims. The engine that is in the X-Type is a "blueprinted" high performance version, and they will naturally make some noise either new or after breakin, which is what we heard. If anyone without the factory equipment tries to reset the valve clearances, they will divert from the optimum setting and eventually the valves will burn up. In conclusion, unlike the word from the local Jag dealer who thought that the tapping was abnormal, the valve tapping is expected and normal. As far as the chrome strip debonding, and the wind noise, - oh well. The dealer was unable to duplicate the A/C problem, so we'll see if it happens again. The main problem, which turns out not to be a problem as the local dealer initially thought, of the engine valves tapping, was not a problem. In light of this, I can withdraw my initial dislike of the X-Type and say that the problems it had are minor and that we can recommend the X-Type to others. Vince

Replying to: desertguy (Jun 23, 2006 12:25 pm) Question for you all. I am set to pick up my car after a long 7 month wait this week. I'm sure they will try to sell me an extended warranty. What do you all think about the warranties...are they worth it...or are non-dealer warranties better? Also, any other oddities that you all have bought for your X-types that you would recommend? Thanks in advance.
