wheel wells and snow by jnmartin

I have the firestone tires and 16" wheels and they locked on snow. I wasn't going too fast as the roads weren't plowed yet, but it felt like my buick did when I drove through a blizzard - out of control. It happened more than once on one morning commute and it I remember correctly when I was turning the steering wheel to either turn the car or to move around a snow patch. I took my foot off of the gas, tapped the brake and tapped the gas again and then had control once again.

My budget prevents snow tires, so I'll have to make due with cleaning my wells every time I go somewhere or when I notice loss of control while driving.

One morning, though, I noticed so much snow behind the driver's front side that the tire had made grooves in the snow. I started taking the thruway to work because they plow first and I don't have to crawl to work. They're pretty good at plowing (central new york), so I'm not too worried, but I hate losing control like that.

pat,
i wish now i had invested in snow tires. you are right, the stock
goodyear tires do not inspire confidence when braking. in fact, i have
found them to lock-up real quick, regardless of speed. they are fine in the rain and dry surfaces but snow is a whole different game. if i could
have predicted all the snowfalls here,i would have bought them. snow in
the philly area is for the most part a one day event. however, one may not get to drive another day without the proper tread surface. new
shoes are on order.

think spring! winters almost over!! summer is a coming!!!

On the down side, I hit something with my left front tire, impacted on shoulder of tire and ruined it. Only have winters on front right on and for rest of season. Matched directionals. Will have to order a new one before next winter. Hakka Q's held up extremely well except for the lack of road hazard warranty which I am not happy about.

mud flaps by jnmartin

do you think that if I buy the focus mud flaps, it would cut down on the snow accumulation in the wheel wells? Or would it cause more of a problem as there will be less space between them and the tire??

We're still seeing snow up here in CNY and even though my focus snow-driving skills are getting better, I'd like a prevention or something that will allow me not to worry so much about driving in snow that's not been plowed.

Thanks'
Jessica

I'm introducing myself -- proud mother to two Foci -- 2000 SE wagon (pitch black/fully loaded) and a 2001 ZX3 (twilight blue/dark charcoal/fully loaded).

Fantastic cars; traded as relatively new SUV in for the ZX3 because of the adv. trac snow handling. Ended up acquiring a car from the dealer (trade) rather than order. A mistake? I don't believe so, but the color isn't exactly what we wanted, but do you really notice when you're in the car?

Hope you enjoy both Focii - you should give us your impressions of driving & comparing these two cars. Gas mileage figures would be of great interest. I think a Zetec equipped wagon with a five-speed would be a very cool car, but I'd guess you have an automatic?

Wagon vs Hatchling by jjc5

Well, after 36 hours with the new hatchling, I'm so happy. It does have a slightly tighter handling than the wagon, but otherwise, it is not much different! I will say that it is nice to get into a "new" car and know the layout completely by heart!

The seat belt is a bit farther back, but that's because the B-pillar in the hatchling is farther back on the car being a two-door.

I find the brakes a bit more responsive; however, they are new and we (my fiance and I) have the 4-disc brakes with the advance trac. I'm not too certain to what extent either contributes. Twice as much brake dust, I suppose.

The hatch is a twilight blue, fully-loaded automatic. We had the option to order it with the manual, but for some reason we decided not.

As for gas mileage, the wagon was obtaining 25-27 mpg until the winter when it became not so good. I'm not certain if that's the winter-blend gas or my driving habits degraded, but I'm getting 21-25 now. I think I may need to have a talk with my Ford dealer about this if it doesn't improve in the next few months.

I have no data on the hatch yet.
