" Subaru Introduces a New Impreza for 2003"
Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), announced the New Impreza for Europe at the Paris Auto Salon 2002.
The Impreza is the model that is developed to be the base car for vehicles participating in the World Rally Championship (WRC). It is also the model that incorporates the most know-how necessary for competing in the WRC. The excellent balance is created by the low centre of gravity, Horizontally-Opposed Engine and the laterally symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) layout dramatically improves the overall driving performance required in winning rally cars and is the core for all other advances made.
In order to progress well in the WRC, the New Impreza being announced is the model with the greatest current potential as a WRC base car mainly due to the reduction of air resistance and the optimisation of car balance.
The most distinctive feature is the aggressively designed exterior. Complete pursuit of the functionality required for achieving WRC success, the use of a new front bumper, headlamps and a large rear spoiler have enhanced aerodynamic performance; this, together with the muscular front fenders, has arrived at an individualistic and refined look. Also, the feeling of interior quality has been improved through the use of all new seat upholstery and by changing the colour scheme of the centre console panel.
From the viewpoint of safety, in addition to every possible device to protect the passengers, the protection of pedestrians has also been incorporated by changing the shapes of the front bonnet and bumpers whilst also using crushable wipers.
Major Changes in the New Impreza
* Exterior design that improves the aerodynamics as a WRC base car.
* A power train and chassis that provide improved driving performance.
* Strengthened safety countermeasures that take into consideration the protection of both the driver and pedestrians.
* The feeling of quality of the interior has been improved by making changes in the materials and colour scheme.
